Take the Blogging Ethics Survey!

surveystuff.jpg

J-Schoolers and other assorted graduate students, please stop clogging our inbox with shit like this, especially if you don't know our name or plan on getting us drunk beforehand. Thanks.

What are we bitching about, you ask? This:

To Whom It May Concern:

Our names are Kristin McCasland and Chris Troutman. We are graduate students in the Mass Communications Department at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. We are studying ethics and the impact they have on the media industry. We are conducting research on blogging and ethics. We are trying to see how the blogging community feels about adhering to a code of ethics like traditional journalists. If you could complete the attached 10-question survey by Tuesday, April 15, 2008 we would greatly appreciate it. [This was sent to us on 4/15/08, by the way.]

Here is the link:

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Kristin McCasland
Chris Troutman

Aside from the gross assumption that traditional journalists adhere to a code of ethics, we don't have the time to tell Krisin and Chris why blogs will ruin the world, why the smell of old books will always reign supreme, or...whatever. That , and we stopped reading at "Are you a trained journalist?" and couldn't go on with the survey. But maybe you, dear SFist reader, can fill out the questionnaire for us? (Sure, it's well past the deadline, but any truly smart student knows how to wield the power of an extension.)

Plus, it is a really stupid questionnaire. "8. In what cases do/would you apply ethics in blogging?" ? Is this for a 10th-grade English class? Give me a break, or ask some thought-provoking questions, snowflake!

If they'd bothered to look at SFist, they'd know it has no ethics. At least when it comes to posting the recently deceased's facebook/myspace pages or photos of people passed out drunk in the street.

Anyway, can we have more stuff about San Francisco and less about blogging/the internet please? (Admittedly you've been a bit better about this recently.)

I wouldn't have been able to finish my MA thesis had it not been for the kindness of relative strangers (VIPs in my field) answering my survey.

However, they should have sent you more information. Universities have an Institutional Review Board which has to approve any research that involves "Human Subjects", and anytime they send out a survey, they should have a cover sheet which explains risks, costs, benefits, procedures, etc.

This is probably more info than anyone here wanted to know.

The questions are all free-form.

Chris and Kristen are going to have their hands full reading all the answers and trying to get any conclusions from them. Perhaps they don't teach stats in Texas?

Brock - come over any time and we'll watch All The President's Men and drink scotch under a naked lightbulb.

Ethics are for girls

Why? What are we going to do with them?

Time for a blogger ethics panel.

Bitter much?

I have to say, the posts recently are just a little too cranky for even my jaded, angry tastes.

Kristin and Chris are graduate students and they write this poorly? Perhaps it is a good thing that Sallie Mae may not be able to fund student loans anymore.

this post should have the girls' Facebook profiles

Ethics in journalism? WTF? I'll take Brock dropping the F bomb any day of the week over that square headed swine Joe Scarborough. Keep on keepin it real yo!

Ciaran, you are right on. Brock, please just e-mail them a link to today's Photo du Jour. And if they respond, post that as well. How's that for your ethics bithces!

lollllllz. no wonder "trained" journalists suck so much...

Kristin and Chris are graduate students and they write this poorly?

They're grad students in Texas. Do you require further explanation beyond that?

Brock has never shown any indication that he knows what ethics are, let alone has any to call his own. Someone should warn the grad students of America that Brock will skew their sample if they keep foisting surveys upon him.

I live in San Francisco, I can't afford Ethics!!!!

Grad students are usually just full of shit.
Grad students in Texas are a little short of the average 8th grader in full of shit-ness.
They should stick to lying to their moms about where they are going with their girlfriends.
For reals.

Darkmoon - I feel your pain.

Are any of you at SFist trained journalists? These four of my life that I'll never get back, they want to know.

some of us are, some of us are not.

Blocker dude doesn't need J-school! The man is an artist!

What about all of the so called "trained" journalists who can't even make poopy ON the paper?

Bad little puppies...
