Heather Fong is now saying that a false report on a police scanner caused last week’s Olympic torch route to “spontaneously” change, according to the New York Times. The chief of police claims that SFPD had been told that the Olympic bus carrying the relay members--the same bus that protesters “vandalized,” assuming it was also carrying the torch-- had “run over and injured protesters on the planned route along the waterfront.”
Oops.
Chief Fong quipped during a press conference after the torch mess, "[s]omehow we were given that information." That information, it seems, was what sparked the Olympic torch to make a surprise shift to Van Ness Avenue, fooling many people who came to San Francisco to witness/protest the flame’s only U.S. stop.

Absolute incompetence.
It took them six days to think that one up? Good lord.
To be honest, I was there when the protesters met the bus, and it was a miracle that nobody was injured. The bus driver was determined to make it through.
Fong should just keep her head down and mouth shut and pray this blows over. Her continually changing excuses just make her look even more incompetent and foolish(if that's even possible).
This is what happens when you appoint someone based on their gender and how "progressive" such an appointment makes you look, rather than their abilities, sad to say.
I'm fully convinced that the next "Chief of Police" is going to be a post-op tranny of Native American, black, asian and latino heritage from a poor inner city family whose single gay dad found her as an abandoned orphan on a doorstep in the Tenderloin then put her through community college. If we're going to pander let's go all the way!
RobinSF, I guess you're saying that heather fong's incompetence (according to you) is due in some way to her gender/ethnicity, and that if we'd had a white male in power (instead of pandering to the PC mobs that control hiring and firing decisions in the city and county of SF) then the torch thing would have gone as smooth as silk?

No. I'm saying that Prince Gavin is a total hack and that Fong was clearly not the most qualified person for the job. Shootouts on Market Street and two blocks from the Hall of Justice in broad daylight and no arrests? The list goes on and on...
I know for a fact that there are dozens of male AND female cops more qualified and ready to lead the SFPD than she. But they weren't tiny Asian lesbians - and that IS the one reason she is chief of police. It's called pandering to a constituency (two actually) and a complete joke. She is not a leader in any way, she is a puppet of the Newsom administration. I've got no issue with a lesbian or an asian leading the SFPD but they damn well better be competent.
Get back to me with a single reason why Fong should be chief of the SFPD and then we can have an informed discussion. Good luck hunting for that reason. Hint: Save your time, it doesn't exist.
I don't have a reason for/ against Fong being chief of police. I don't even know how much power a chief of police wields and what, either for or against, can be directly attributed to their leadership.
(But even if what you say is true, her rise to a position of power where she could be named chief preceded gavin.)
It seems you're disappointed in the city's police squad. Is there another model you suggest we follow?
In my experience outside influences have more affect on crime rates than does the police chief - or at least as I've seen from living in DC, and NYC and now SF. When the economy is good, crime rates fall.
How about Springshield? Headed by Chief Homer Simpson?
That excuse is such a lie it's not even funny.
And really, when they worked out the entire charade beforehand, they didn't think to make their lies consistent?
Think of the Chief of Police as the CEO who sets the direction for what the rank and file need to do and do not do. What the SFPD spend their time on every day is dictated by the Chief and who she puts in charge of the various departments within the organization. If the Chief serves at the behest of an incompetent mayor who can't run his personal life, let alone one of the greatest Cities on the planet, then there is a serious problem.
San Francisco is a world class city and deserves much better than this crew. There are a lot of highly trained, dedicated and brave cops who want to solve crime and rid the streets of thugs, druggies and all around bad apples but they are left standing around directing traffic because the Chief has no clue or plan. That is incompetence at the least and a serious crime at the worst.
This is not a big town but the amount of brazen crime is highly disturbing and increasing by the week. I demand competence and accountability from my public servants. You should do the same.
