Dumbest Driver of the Hour

The word bad doesn't begin to cover how San Franciscans drive. We really, really suck at it. Take, for example, this poor pretty thing who barreled down Powell Street while "yapping on her cell phone." She managed to steer clear from colliding into any cable cars, thank God, but not before sideswiping a couple of parked cars and almost running over a few bystanders.

On the scene, Greg Dewar recalls the vehicular melee over at N Judah Chronicles.

PS, this is something your SFist editor would totally do, too. We almost feel bad for her.

I saw some dude in a Honda do this the other night.

i got my CA driver license on April Fool's Day this year. nobody believed me when i said that i passed the test and was issued a license until it actually showed up in the mail. :( i am in the horrible driver boat as well

is that a prius?

hyundai accent i believe

thanks for the linky goodness!

I have to say I was surprised at how fast she drove AND the look on the cable car operators' faces was priceless. I snapped some pictures and said "oh hell yeah this is going in the internet" and they laughed.

That N Judah author is obviously a misogynist and his post is aimed solely at a woman for daring to drive in a mighty man's world. I'm amazed that the author didn't talk about putting the driver back in the kitchen where she belongs, or some other backwards crap.

Look, Judah, everybody makes driving mistakes. It happens to MEN as well as women. For you to single this person out based solely on her gender is unfair, irrational, and nothing more than hate speech.

I demand that you replace your hateful post immediately with an apology for your despicable conduct. Failing that, if you could at least remove your head from your ass, it would be much appreciated.

Here's hoping that no one is dumb enough to be friends with Judah, much less a woman to have a relationship with a pig like that.

i stand tall and proud and say "i am friends with judah." and i do have a relationship, however it is with plug2 -- a woman.

can both be possible? hmmmmm.

ok, its too nice outside to argue in the comments section, so im going to take the N-Judah to the beach with the aforementioned plug2 and enjoy this fine san franciscan day.

Oh come on. Stereotypes exist because certain people are prone to doing certain things more frequently than others. I was walking through the Safeway parking lot and stopped when I saw two cute female asian drivers on their cell phones heading in super slow motion directly towards one another. If they were doing 5mph it would be an exaggeration. I bumped my friend's arm and said "check this out" and pointed at them. Seconds later, they smacked directly into one another in THE slowest head on collision EVER - and both had a complete look of shock as if they were unaware that they were even driving a car. I laughed so hard I was crying and fell to the ground. Sorry that some racist idiots ruin it for the rest of us who just see these little incidents as part of our amusing expectations in life.

um gang, don't get too upset at RFJason's comments...this IS the same person that managed to get a rise out of Dan Savage:

http://www.rfjason.com/article/tainted_savage_love

but thanks to plug1 for standing up....we'll have to buy y'all a cocktail sometime when we do the N Judah Pub Crawl.

LOL, rfjason. Don't feed the trolls.

The car looks like an el cheapo rental.

I don't feel the least bit bad for this idiot. Get off your damn phone and pay attention to what you're doing. It's not that difficult.

it's not that SF drivers are bad, it is that trying to driving around SF is an exercise in the ridiculous.

The traffic laws in SF are verging on the draconian, most obvious the near outlawing of the left hand turn. Not only are basic maneuvers, such as turning, outlawed throughout the city but street change from one way to two to opposite direction with no particular rhyme or reason. The logic seems to be that commercial streets are to busy for people to turn on and that residential streets need to be protected from traffic on the commercial streets. It might not be such a problem if Muni could get it's act together but since they are often forced to deal with the same restrictions they have even more headaches to deal with then cities like New York or Chicago.

I have lived in SF for several years now and still find myself tearing my hair out as I go blocks out of my way, and turning and turning and turning in a simple attempt to get to an local business/attraction that seems to be imprisoned in a maze of restrictions that allow you to go anywhere except for where you need to go.

FYI, lolcat is sooooo 2007.

*dumbass! never talk on your cellphone!

Well BDBear, you have obviously missed all the press coverage of UPS' no-left-turn policy. I'd love to see all major arteries like Lombard become no-left-turn 24/7.

well Liz obviously you missed this part of the coverage "(taking into consideration, of course, those instances where not to make the left-hand turn would result in a ridiculously circuitous route)." which seems to be SOP in SF

and since I would be "sitting" in the left hand turn lane in my Prius using ZERO gas I would prefer to just be able to turn left 24/7 (just like I was able to in Chicago and New York City) instead of driving 4,6, or 10 extra blocks wasting gas in an attempt to get across one lane of on coming traffic.

The problem with making all major arteries no left hand turns is that you run into the law of unintended consequences. Such a change, which almost always combined with synchronized stop lights, essentially make these streets into expressways bisecting neighborhoods within SF and making the city LESS pedestrian friendly, hurting business along these major commercial streets due to declines in foot traffic, increasing automotive speeds (thus increasing the number and severity of auto accidents along with air pollution) and trapping residents.

Interestingly, by adding turn lanes at intersections, placing medians with planters, trees, and other vegetation, and better coordination of one way streets, you achieve several very positive effects. The center medians with the vegetation reduce driver stress, thus naturally slowing their speed and reducing accidents, the plants create additional shade reducing the heat island effect of an urban environment and of course absorb carbon, encourage more pedestrian use and increase foot traffic to local businesses along the street.

Chicago has had tremendous success with a plan just like this and has seen improved air quality, less demand for city services (like police, tow trucks, and ambulance calls to accidents) and increases in pedestrian and bicycle use of the streets where median planters and turn lanes where included.

Did she actually hit some cable cars? Why did the cable car operators let her go? Cable cars cost like $2 million each.

Probably about ten years ago, I was waiting late night for a cable car at Powell-Market and a car drove down the tracks with four guys in it. They drove onto the turntable. Three jumped out. One started taking photos while the other two spun the car around on the turntable.

They all cheered, jumped back in the car, and drove off. As it was late, there were no cable cars in sight, and few of us waiting for any. I laughed at the prank.

This, on the other hand, is very poor driving. If you don't realize where you're going, you don't see things (adults, children, one way streets) that can lead to a lot of hurt for just not the idiot, but the person who gets in their way. I've seen too many people turn the wrong way into one way streets or come very close to taking out pedestrians at intersections.

Driving unknowingly into a closed street is a show of a much more dangerous driver than someone ding 80mph on the freeway.

I worked on Powell the first month i lived in the city and I waited for this to happen. Saw two close calls but never the real deal.

Driving in this city is hard, especially since a large portion of people who drive here don't live here or don't drive on a regular basis.

rfjason, you don't happen to drive a white hyndai accent do you?

Maybe I’m just a dumb blonde, but I’ve read the N-Judah account twice now, and can’t figure out what’s so misogynist about it.

This is nothing compared to the guy who drove his truck down the tracks at 20th/Church before crashing straight into the third or fourth cable pillar down from the top. This was about two years ago.

BDBear, did you really need to mention the fact that you drive a Prius? Good for you! You're obviously very proud...

The problem with putting in left hand turn lanes in areas like SOMA, is it inevitably causes huge backups in those lanes and slows traffic on the whole. I'm sure you already know this, as you seem like a smart guy. Regarding one way streets, I can think of several areas in SOMA where they change from one to two way, especially down around my apartment at 12th and Harrison. It's pretty easy to navigate once you get used to it tho, and I can't imagine anyone living here more than a year would have that much difficulty driving around. It's pretty straightforward that the major arteries in SOMA are one way between 10th and 1st.

Same deal with the streets downtown, I honestly don't think it's that big a deal...
