During yesterday's mess, we almost forgot that there was an Olympic torch we all wanted to see. And here it is...in the Marina.

Yeah, you know what that picture says to me? Land of the free, baby.
I think its more of a "Home of the brave" image
That one cop has quite a grip on his baton, bha ha ha!
"SFPD Tactical" hat, sassy sunglasses, baton in hand and scowl on face. Yet another douchebag with a gun protecting absolutely nothing in a not so rough neighborhood. Watch out for those Marina chicks jogging down the Green, tough guys! (You might need the break out the riot gear and tear gas to get a sandwich over at the Safeway.) San Francisco has the best armed crowd control tax dollars can buy. I want my money back.
Why can't they spend just a little more time trying to solve a few more murders, clearing out more drug dealers or - get this - solving some fucking CRIME??? How about Chief-ette Fong expends this kind of forceful "police presence" and effort in the TL, Western Addition and Hunters Point - today, tomorrow and the day after that? It's obvious based on the photos that we have cops, why not use them?
Protecting a goddamn torch - hell, I could have robbed every bank in SF yesterday and nobody would have showed up because every goddamn cop in this city was protecting a torch from getting grabbed for a staged photo op. Great job ladies.
I've never witnessed such blatant incompetence from public servants in my entire life. I hope we paid lots of overtime to the ladies in blue for their hard work marching around in circles all day long. I feel so much safer today now that they are all back to standing around giving directions to tourists and drinking coffee.
Typical Gavin Newsom/Leather Fong bullshit - they only pay attention and put on a show when the cameras are on. I'd like to kick both of them in their tiny nutsacks.
If you couldn't tell, I'm absolutely disgusted.
torch, schmorch
Maybe if we didn't freakin' protest everything all the freakin' time we wouldn't have to waste so much money on crowd control.
BTW, any bets on whether the protesters yesterday were the same protesters that rail against anything and everything? Don't these people actually have jobs?
I just love the idea of a public parade that was largely hidden from the public.
Glad everyone was kept safe.
Well, if it had to go through a neighborhood, I think we can all agree that the Marina was a great choice to represent San Francisco. It really incorporates all that is special and unique about our fair city. NOT.
Although kudos to Gavin for having the torch run through his old Supervisor District and no one elses. Hmmmmmmm,
Thanks for picking up the photo. Here's video footage of the torch along the Marina Green It was so dreamy.
I'm still giggling at "Leather Fong".
Nothing says tough like a bike helmet.
Was I dissapointed that the torch didn't go down the Embarcadero, where I had a great spot to watch from? YES!
Was I happy that they were able to successfully hold a torch run in San Francisco, without protestors messing it up? YES!
Was I pretty impressed with the news teams who figured out the coverage as it went, and actually seemed to know the city pretty well? (GO Sal on Channel 2... you do know your city, it's various landmarks, etc really well!) - YES!
Am I surprised that the President of the BOS is talking out against the Mayor? No.... What would he have done - pushed the torch into the melee & let the world see a totally nutty SF? Probably!
"Pushed the torch into the melee & let the world see a totally nutty SF?"
That would have been awesome. Seriously, Beijing had to know what it was getting itself into. If you're going to try to burnish your anti-human rights/shit on the environment image with a highly visible publicity stunt, it's pretty well known that San Francisco is probably not the best venue.
They should have run the torch through Mississippi or somewhere similar.
Yeah, I was wondering that myself - sure, on the surface SF is a natural choice for the torch, but the committee probably should have thought a bit harder about that. Their own fault I suppose.
citi zen, what makes you think this was any kind of success? Thousands of pissed off tourists, motorists and protestors equals success? (If I had changed my driving route to avoid the east side of town only to be completely hosed when the torch ran elsewhere, in my way, I would still be spitting!) If you saw the torch yesterday, it was by mere chance, or because you were on the job. How is that a success?
Admit it people, its not about the kids from Foster City who missed on their chance to see the torch, you're sad because you didn't get see carnage.
That cop is also a little sad he didn't get to square off with his arch nemesis: trustafarian protester girl with red eyes, hairy armpits and indecipherable words spewing from her mouth.
Oh well, there's always next time.
I guess I'm a little clueless since I'm not from this area originally, but I've found, in the protests I've attended here, as well as ones I've just witnessed walking to work, that the police generally here tend to show quite a bit of restraint.
I shudder to think how the red state police I'm used to would handle pierced and tie-dyed and chanting/lying in the streets protesters.
Maybe I just wasn't in the "rabble-rousing" part of those protests. But the cops seemed fairly gentle in making the few arrests I've seen.
the dali lami just said in seattle that he supports the olympics being in beijing and that china is the most appropriate asian country to host them. he sounded proud.
suck it protesters!
i love gave and leather fong!
the fucking rock!
