Google Map Plots Out Oakland Murders of 2007, 2008

Your optimistic San Francisco Chronicle has decided that the best way for you to imagine how many murders take place in Oakland each year (and where) is to plot them out on a Google map mashup.

Each marker, once clicked, shows the victim's name, date they were killed, age and cause. On some, there are links to the corresponding news story.

We're not sure about you, but we think this is a morbid mix of technology and murders. There doesn't seem to be any corresponding story/reason for spending time on making this map. Is this map supposed to make you want to avoid Oakland? Or make us angry at Oakland murder statistics?

Map made by Marcus Chan/The Chronicle.

That map isn't _anywhere_ near as good as this one:

is this like how you guys plotted gang activity on a google map this summer?

They've had this for a while...they have one for SF too...

did you seriously wonder aloud about somebody having a "reason for spending time on" ... anything on the internet? really? you've been paying attention, right?

Why would the existence of this map have anything to do with optimism? Yes, I agree, morbid--but The Chronicle is reporting and if they are neutral, which no one is but they ideally intend to be, they should have no motive to make you feel anything. Those people died, does that kill your buzz? Oh, sorry.
