SFIAAFF: Always Be Boyz

alwaysbeboyz.jpgWho knew that B-boys were such a big deal in Korea? We sure didn't. Always Be Boyz was certainly a wakeup call: director John Kwon directed this movie based on a true story, following the quest of breakdancer Seven and his B-boy crew to get to the Battle of the Year tournament. What is expected to be a cliche story of the struggles of this crew is anything but; Kwon directs this story with love and care for his subjects and has some surprises in store for the audience.

The main goal of reaching the Battle of the Year is, like any movie similar to this, riddled with struggle and problems. Seven, is trying to improve himself and the art of breakdancing by reading Socrates and studying ballet, while the other members of the crew are pursuing their own projects and learning about themselves as well. At times disappointed with the lifestyle of being in a b-boy crew, the guys help pull each other through the tough times on the way to the Battle of the Year.

Kwon inserts his take on this genre of dance competition films, but inserts his own unique vision -- this especially comes through in the dancing scenes and opening credits. If you're into b-boys, this movie is definitely worth seeing.

SFIAAFF concluded on March 23, but please support Asian cinema when possible.

Breaking, of course, started back in NYC. Since then, the torch has been passed around the globe--Europe, Japan. But it is now burning strong in Korea. I doubt I'll watch this movie because, cmon a dance movie in Korea is still a dance movie. But still, Deh Han Min Gook!
