  • Just before 11 a.m. on Sunday, a fatal shooting occurred in Visitacion Valley. San Francisco police fond the body of a 31-year-old man at the 100 block of Blythdale Avenue. According to SF Crime (via BCN) someone who knew the victim called the police. Several; gun shell casings were found at the scene.

Update: the murder victim has been identified as Gregory Bennett.

Police have yet to make any arrests. Do you know something? If so, call the SFPD's anonymous tip line at 415-575-4444.

  • According to a report from UC Berkeley, San Francisco's crime cameras haven't done shit--other than using taxpayers' dollars dollars, that is--to slowdown such criminal activity as assaults, sex offenses or robberies. Tjose crimes have just moved down the block, hidden from the cameras' views. And Newsom? Doesn't care. He called the study "conclusively inconclusive." How clever.

According to the Gate, Mayor Newsom "wants to install more cameras around the city because they make residents feel safer." Feel safer? Well, so long as or actions are based in feelings rather than logic, then....well, we wouldn't be San Francisco without it.

Let's hope that concentrating a police presence in those 4-5 regions of the City with unusually high historical instances of violence IS effective.

If the cameras are effective in mitigating crime in the immediate area that they watch, perhaps we should all be setting up cameras (fake or real) to help push crime down the block.

Anyone see the news piece about the guy who parked his truck on the street and came back to find the side mirror knocked off? He installs the street cameras, and happened to park in view of one. The camera captures a police sheriff van not only hitting his mirror but hitting the brakes to look at it before leaving the scene with no note.

Sherriff van? That doesn't surprise me. I was almost run down while legall crossing Davis in the crosswalk by a Sherriff van last week. Open season on pedestrians in San Francisco year-round, even by our "protectors."
