leanne looks so tiny! how precious

That picture is not actually for the new bridge. It is for the temporary bridge such that traffic can be routed off of the old bridge so that they can then connect the new bridge. Yes, we are talking about three separate bridges here! So don't get too excited. It is going to be years before the new bridge will be done. At least 23 years since the old one was damaged in the earthquake!

skibu666: I knew it couldn't be the actual span (wrong side) so I was wondering what was going on. The entire set does have photos of the real one though.

I've been following the bridge process basically every day for the last 2 years, since I to and from Berkeley by bus for school. The temp bridge pictured is at an angle I could never see from the bus, so I'd been wondering how they were going to handle replacing the last part. Obviously, for the very last section they'll have to close the bridge for a weekend again, but they've done pretty well with that the last few times.

As another example of how bad the publicity for the new bridge is, when I first saw signs that there would be a pedestrian walkway, everyone I told about it had no idea that was going to be part of it.

Then again, I'm not sure how much foot traffic a walkway that basically goes from Yerba Buena Island to the MacArthur Maze would get. I assume once it's built there will be some way for people to actually get to it, but I can't find any decent information about it.

wchase, On the FAQ when they say this:

Q: What will happen to the old bridge?
A: It is scheduled to be demolished in 2007.

"2007" actually refers to "2007 years after the end of time"

I like this answer:

Q: How will the old bridge be demolished?
A: Vewwwy Carefwuwwy!
