House Fire Kills Two Men In East Oakland

oakland%20fire%20map.jpg

After last night's fire in the Mission displaced over 50 San Franciscans, an early morning East Oakland blaze at 2640 74th Avenue proved fatal, killing two men.

It seems that the two died during a botched rescue attempt. The first victim "fled the fire along with other occupants of the house. But the man apparently rushed back into the house in an attempt to rescue the other man," Oakland Police Sgt. Barry Donelan tells the Oakland Tribune. "Both apparently were overcome by smoke and died in the flames." Their bodies were found in the back of the home.

The two-alarm blaze erupted just after 1:30 a.m., which firefighters had under control an hour later. Five residents, though, were lucky enough to escape. While the "fire is not considered suspicious," it's under investigation.
