Newsom's Attendance No Longer Required at Board of Supervisor Meetings?

empty%20throne.jpg

You know how Mayor Gavin Newsom is supposed to make a special guest appearance at the Board of Supervisors meeting? At least once a month? To listen to their complaints, demonstrate that he's taking an active interest in neighborhood politics, powder the Supes' tender bottoms, and such? Well, it looks like he might not have to anymore, even though you, the voter, said you wanted him there. Over at Sweet Melissa, we came across the following news:

At tomorrow's Board of Supervisors meeting, they will be voting on the fast food menu labeling ordinance and on something that has ever-so-quietly made its way though the Rules Committee and on to the full Board: a motion to eliminate [.pfd alert!] the Board rule requiring a monthly appearance by the Mayor at the Board. Back in November 2006, SF voters passed Prop I, a policy statement requiring the Mayor to appear at the Board once a month.

SM goes into further legal detail, so check her out to find out the legal specifics. It goes without saying that we're all atwitter about how the vote will go come tomorrow. Well, as atwitter as one can get about City Hall, anyway

Let's do the math. We voted on this twice. It passed twice. Gavin thumbs his nose at people of San Francisco once again. He's got things to do, like plan a failed gubernatorial race in 2012.

I've got his campaign slogan already picked out.

Newsom: Fuck You, I'm Busy.

The watered-down version passed the first time. An attempt at a stronger version failed.

It is "city policy to urge the Mayor" to attend. You could write the rule in various ways. Regardless, the mayor isn't required to attend.

There's always next year to try to require the mayor to attend.

Any attempt at the governor's office will succeed or fail in 2010, Robin.

once again the failure of progressives in 2007 rears its head. Daly put the stronger measure on the ballot and neither he nor anyone did a thing to try and get it passed.

so now all we're left with is a toothless resolution that has no power. the progressives love to bandy that thing about but hey, the chicken suit thing was a year ago, and since then, progressives got pwned.

and now all they can do is run for DCCC? Yeah, great. Push out the activists and locals so the politicos can have more fun. Yay team.

This was NOT passed twice.
Of course, feel free to get all worked up by the idea that it did.

At this point what difference does it make. Gavin Newsome has proven that he is uninterested in local concerns. He was skiing with Twinkie during the oil spill. Then he proposed to Twinkie during the whole Tiger mauling mess. He's an embarrassment. I'd rather him not attend the meetings at this point. Are children even allowed inside the Board meetings? If not, it's a moot point.

Hey at Least our Mayor gets it for free and does not have to pay for it.....

How about an initiative to change the City Charter so that the mayor must wait 8 years after they were last elected before they can run for Govenor?

Daly and Mirkarimi are arguing it against the motion right now at the Board.
