UPDATE: Greenpeace and UC Berkeley Students to Hold the Most Disgusting Protest Ever Tomorrow

Deep breath. Wow. Jesus. Okay, here we go:
Well, it seems that Greanpeace and UC Berkeley student organizers will host an, um, "Toilet-Trees" event on Sproul Plaza on the UCB campus tomorrow, Thursday, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Why? To alert the student body of the clear-cutting practices of Kleenex Brand's parent company, Kimberly-Clark.
What is a "toilet-trees" event? We....oh God, is it what we think it is? The press release, which you can find after the jump, proudly declares that "[t]here will be great visuals and photo opportunities!" So...will be people be urinating and defecating in public? Under a tree? In plain view? Please advise. Someone. Anyone.
While there is clearly no one more green and environmentally astute than SFist, college students need all the assistance they can get in maintaining proper physical hygiene. (Really, most of these kids hardly know how to wipe themselves properly -- not because they're "hippies," but because they're dirty teenagers.) We can't get behind anything that might steer them away from pristine cleanliness.
Now, please excuse us. We need to go bathe in a tub of bleach.
Update: Whew. We just talked to GP, and there will be no public defecation and/or urination. It's simply a public display of "trees being flushed down toilets" -- a symbolic event, if you will, about clear-cutting. So..there you have it. (Although we must admit, pooping would be much more effective.)
We're still taking a dip in some Clorox, though.
Subject: Press Release 2/28 UC BERKELEY EVENT ON SPROUL PLAZA
FOR RELEASE:This Thursday, the 28th, Greenpeace along with UC Berkeley student organizers will be hosting a "Toilet-Trees" event on Sproul Plaza on the
Berkeley Campus 10am-2pm to alert students to the clear-cutting practices of Kleenex Brand's parent company, Kimberly-Clark. This is the world's largest tissue manufacturer and uses clear-cut wood sourced from ancient forests to make a product that millions of people use - and then simply throw away. Students all across the country have been organizing to send a clear message to Kimberly-Clark that sustainable universities will not buy their products. UC-Berkeley prides itself on being a sustainable campus, and we too want to send a clear message Kimberly-Clark that they will not get away with their clear-cutting practices - as students will unite our voices and stand up to them. Our event is designed to call attention to Kimberly-Clark's practices and garner student support for passing a student resolution stating our concern regarding Kimberly-Clark's practices.
There will be great visuals and photo opportunities!
We would love for you to come out. If interested I will gladly send over more information, and feel free to contact me as well.
Thanks so much for your time and consideration; Also I'd like to give you a heads up on a big action we're doing next week, but I need you to respect the fact that it's confidential and nobody can know until the day of the event as it's controversial.

interesting read about the issue here:

if anyone finds a site to debunk this story, please post it. i try not to take anyone's word for anything these days.
forestry management is a complicated issue.
And after the protest the kids will go home and wipe their bums with Kimberly-Clark products for the next sixty years, never once registering their own hypocracy and naivety. Still it's just kids, at least they'll grow up and get jobs and pay taxes, no wait it's Berkley.
Let me see, that site had no supporting evidence, no quotes, no graphs, no maps, no statistics. I believe it!
This site is just posting old comments now. What I said was, the link above contains no facts, no quotes, no supporting evidence, no maps, no photos. I believe it!
Will the display be created out of recyclable paper?
er, recycled...
Nah, they'll go home to wipe with Seventh Generation tp. There are alternatives to KC toilet paper.
Or they'll use their roomate's wash cloth.
We're going to hold a counter protest against skid marks.
No way, the only things holding my boxers together are the stubborn understains.
i saw a greenpeace event in San Fran a few years back and it was pretty cool. they really rearch their shit and seem to get stuff done. the stuff they do with the whales is crazy, check out this video of these guys http://youtube.com/watch?v=sMzF6kLeqJo
fizzyandpop: this PDF they wrote seems to have a lot of numbers and hard facts, complete with bibliography! http://www.kleercut.net/en/files/ChainofLies_final.pdf
Interesting......looks like this event will give a whole new outlook on "public restrooms". sounds pretty exciting but please keep your pants on people.
Sweet! Greenpeace rocks my socks!
uh oh....looks like those greenpeacers have a reputation for taking thier pants off.
.
this makes me really want to check out the event, those greenpeace girls are pretty cute. I will be there!
I dunno... I kind of like the pants off idea...
but regardless this sounds pretty kick ass...

Yea I looked into this new Kimberly-Clark attempt to promote their 100% non-recycled tissue brands and found this ridiculous youtube video... I've been following Greenpeace's work to protect ancient forests for a while and it seems very legit, I've also heard several campuses around the country have spoken out against Kimberly-Clark and I think it's pretty sweet that students are voicing their disgust w/the company's unsustainable policies.

I just found this video on youtube. its about the kleercut campaign. Apparently its nation wide, UC Berkeley isn't the first to cut Kimberly-Clark. And if you've checked out the information on their website Kimberly-Clark doesn't use ANY recycled material in their products. I hope the event is successful because KC unsustainable practices are ridiculous.
"If not now when? If not me who?"
Doesn't everyone in Berkeley have those Japanese auto spritz your hole with water robot toilets?
