Meet Jackie Speier, Your New Congressional Representative

Ms. Speier, your campaign seems to have the momentum of a runaway freight train. Why are you so popular? Larger photo here.

The Sunset Community Democratic Club hosted a meeting last night to allow people to talk with congressional candidate Karen Lorraine Jacqueline Speier

Read all about it after the jump.

Jackie wowed the standing room only crowd with her stories about taking on PG&E and their PCBs, about growing up in the bay area (and being born in the Sunset), and about placing a friendly bet that she will receive less than 80% of the vote in the upcoming special election.

A few big names thought about challenging her and then rejected the idea. Lawrence Lessig got lots of input from his friends about how he had no chance, Leland Yee is happy as a clam being a senator until 2015, and Yul Kwon didn't answer our email so who knows what he's thinking, but he'll consider other posts later on in all probability.

Others who qualified for the open primary on April 8 include: Republicans Greg Conlon and Michael Moloney, Democrats Michelle McMurry and Frank Henry Wade (possibly), and Green Partier Barry Hermanson.

The way things are going, Jackie will be sworn-in in about a month and a half.

Don't mention the landing strip, I did once, but I think I got away with it.

Because California's congressional districts are gerrymandered, Jackie Speier will only represent a portion of the Sunset when she is elected by the 12th district. The district does include the zoo and Ed Jew's alleged Sunset and actual Burlingame residences. The remainder of the Sunset is represented by Nancy Pelosi.

With an appointed supervisor (Chu), no congressperson, and a mock mayoral election, I'm currently feeling rather unrepresented as a taxpayer and a voter.

Hey, if the candidate herself mentions the landing strip, (as she has done--many, many times) I say: fair game.
