Oakland Woman Killed While Gettng Her Mail

Just outside of her Montclair home, Laura Belkin, 58, was stuck and killed by a hit-and-run driver this morning as she was getting her mail on the 5900 block of Zinn Drive off Snake Road in the Oakland hills. According to the Gate:
Police are searching for the driver of a dark, late 1990s to early 2000s sport utility vehicle, possibly similar in style to a Toyota 4-Runner, Banks said.
If any East Bay readers out there have any info, do give a call to the police: 510-777-8570.
And in more hit-and-run news, the fuzz in San Jose are looking for a silver pickup truck in another fatal hit-and-run. A woman, while "crossing the road improperly," was struck at Oakland Road and McKay Drive about 6:20 p.m. last night. You know something/ Well then, call San Jose police at 408-277-4051.

Maybe the best thing they could do would be to teach traffic regulations to cyclists. As a pedestrian, I get nearly run over almost daily by cyclists who don't see any need to stop at stoplights or ride in the street or follow any other traffic regulation that doesn't suit them.

SUV's - 2
Humans- 0
only one report claims a SUV was involved.
pick up truck/suv....all the same (sorta)
I used to live in Montclair, just a few 'blocks' away from Zinn drive, and I'm surprised that there haven't been more accidents involving pedestrians. There are no sidewalks in the hills, the roads are narrow, steep and there's tonnes of sharp, blind turns. I can't even count the number of times I had to jump into the bushes to avoid being hit by a car whilst walking the dog.
Very tragic.
What do either of these incidents have to do with bikes?
Absolutely. Cyclist education would definitely decrease the number of hit and run fatalities. WTF??
re: smurphs super ironical rant
So OK, maybe he's just got some extra sass in his pants today, but don't be too hard on him - he doesn't ride his bike on the sidewalks! That's just for "crackheads" and "immigrants", right murphs?
(I love that quote!)
Wow. That's just great. Two women are killed, and all murphstahoe can do is grind his own little, puny, undersized ax in a misguided attempt at humor.
What a way to try and make this about you and your issues, dude.
Aventinus - you missed my point completely.
The woman killed in Oakland is a victim of a driver. A bad driver. Less bad drivers, less victims. Less drivers period, less victims. I am not trying to be funny. I am trying to live longer, and by reducing my driving, I am definitely far less likely to create a victim, contrary to what many of my compatriots seem to believe. Sadly it also increases my likelihood of becoming a victim, but let's forget that part for now.
Everyone feels sad for this woman. The question is, how many realize that there but for the grace of god they did not kill someone today. And how many are willing to modify their behaviors to improve the situation. Certainly not the 50% or so of drivers I see while on my way to work who are on their cellphones.
The majority of people who kill someone while behind the wheel of their car are not bad people (this hit and run driver is by definition a bad person in addition to a bad driver).
