It's Got to be the Protest After

20080212_083934_old_o12marine_04_ay-cibb_GALLERY.jpgFascist Imperial Dogs 1 - Tree Loving Hippies 0- After all that protesting and dancing and carrot juice drinking, the Berkeley City Council chickened out and said they erred in passing that January resolution that disinvited a Marine recruiting station and called them "unwelcome intruders." In that resolution, they also allowed Code Pink permission to blast all sorts of things at the station, gave them a designated parking space in front of it, and permission to protest on Wednesdays from noon to 4 p.m. Why Wednesday? Because it’s Hump Day! They did, however, refuse to issue an apology and used part of their mea culpa to lash out at the Bush administration and the war. This didn't satisfy some conservatives as Senator Jim DeMint of South Carolina introduced the "Semper Fi Act" which would redirect money to UC Berkeley and give it to the Southern Heritage Coalition so they can sew more flags with the Confederate flag in them.

The decision, however, did not come without much in the way of mayhem. Four protesters were arrested, one of them for allegedly bitch-slapping a pig cop, another for busting out a knife (which he said was needed as Code Pink draped him a pink banner and he doesn't look good in a pink) and two skateboarders. Jodie Evans, a cofounder of Code Pink and a yoga studio owner, says they'd like to put the measure on a ballot anyways, so, there. Hey, maybe they can combine that with the Peace Center and Berkeley will shoot off holographic images into the air, something we're sure, many in Berkeley would get off on, especially if it was done to Floyd. Anyways, you can read a live blog of the protest here, including details of dueling radios consisting of one side blasting the National Anthem and the other Culture Club’s "The War Song." No, we’re just joking, they blasted Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth" and, wait for it-- Bob Dylan's "The Times They Are A-Changin'," Jesus, aren't there any songs they can play that isn't over 40 years old? There's gotta be at least five Rage Against the Machine songs they could have played and they friggin' rock. Or, hell, Black Sabbath's "War Pigs." Come on everybody: "Generals gathered in their masses/Just like witches at black masses/Evil minds that plot destruction/Sorcerers of deaths construction."

a true victory for common sense and rational behavior fans everywhere.

way to go!

Facists? From Facebook?

Lovely headline.

Lots of Toby Keith. And Harley exhausts. And helicopters. It was not a quiet night for me (I live 2.5 blocks away!).

I did see a bunch of the pro-military out-of-towner side all signing a large American flag. I didn't want to say anything about them defacing a flag in case there was a knife happy guy from Roseville lurking about.

The pro-Marines did not reflect well upon themselves...pulling a knife on some old ladies, and letting a couple young teens on skateboards rile them to the point of fists flying? Seriously...

and the code pink terrorist have done so much better?

like i said, a true victory for common sense, neither side has much claim to possess

they should do this every day. Then these diabolical people (on both sides) will not be where I am, unlesss i'm there, which I won't be.

Did anyone catch the news this morning? I could have sworn KTVU had footage of flaming bags of poo and a hippie attempting to rescue his bicycle from a set-ablaze bike rack.

Or I could have been dreaming.

At least you can understand Dylan and Buffalo Springfield's lyrics. I can never understand what the hell Rage Against the Machine is saying. Pretty hard to have a singalong to screaming.

This is what happens when Ron Paul drops out of the race.

bluecanary: If it's too loud...
