The Central Subway: It's Gonna Be Terrific!
![]()
Good news! The FTA says that building a Central Subway would be a great idea. The FTA, whose local website hasn't been updated in about a year, evaluated project justification, mobilitiy improvements, and land use; and they gave the project a "medium-high" to "high" rating in those categories. They're also supposed to rate alternatives analysis and local financial commitment, but those criteria aren't mentioned in Muni's chipper press release.
Once category that doesn't appear to get much evaluating is the agency's competence to operate the subway once it's built. But that was never in doubt, was it?

Pessimism is always rewarded.
I'm amazed that the bushies would approve anything so expensive for SF with Fed $ unless they have ulterior motives.
Ebola spray from the train air conditioners?
Tunnels through quicksand and tar pits?
I'm guessing it's getting Fed$ because it's supposed to help the new development in the China Basin area and helping the rich get richer is what BushCo is all about, yes?
I'm a huge advocate of rail and I think this is the worst rail project in the known universe. They build this thing, you can forget about future rail lines in SF.
Unncessary. By the time this project can be completed, humans will have evolved into a new species capable of telepathic time and space travel. What's the point?
remember, it takes 20 years to get anything approved around here. this project probably made more sense back when they tore down the embarcadero freeway.
just like it made more sense 20 years ago to give pat kuleto that 1/3 of the open space for the two new monstrosity restaurants.
I wish they'd pursue the BRT lanes - maybe close off some non-commercial traffic around Union Square and Chinatown/North Beach instead of pursuing more tunnels with a good likelihood of having water table (flooding) problems.
