For those who care (responding to the original posting), the last outdoor phone booths in Manhattan are on West End Avenue. The booth shown in the Colin Farrell film does not exist in reality.

sorry about the posting errors. out of my control. lot's more pay phones out there in sf than I remembered. actual phone booths are rarer still.

There's one on the Corner of 15th and Sanchez and another 500 feet away on Market. I live a few houses from the 15th and Sanchez phone - it is active in the area of drug trafficking and frequented entirely by Upper Market Crazies.

What if you get a flat or have an emergency and your battery dies or you don't have coverage or -- god forbid -- you don't even carry one?! Getting rid of landlines is stupid given how fallible cell phones are.

I thought that was a treasure island phonebooth. I could tell by the trash can. There a few on the island, or there were 5 years ago when I lived there. Most are in the middle of nowhere. I think they are actually a portal for Harry Potter and friends to visit the city.

But Sprint service still works all over the Sunset, right? Didn't know about this issue. http://no-celltower.com/ now that the Sunset is safe, I'll no longer need my aluminum hat. yay! That resevoir would make a nice space for a helipad though. Mmmm.

I was thinking more like an actual phone booth kind of payphone, like you're inside a little house with glass walls. They used to have glass doors back in the day, but it seems like phone booths aren't allowed to have doors anymore, for some reason.

There are surprisingly many pay phones out here in the central Sunset (we're the Luddites who blocked a 60 foot Sprint cell tower 3 years ago). I know a lady down the street who uses the pay phone at Noriega and 24th Ave to call relatives in Europe once a week. However, I don't know of any phone booths here. Then again, we don't have bus shelters either. Or public toilets.

There is a pay phone on 18th and Castro, right next to the Bearbucks. How do I know this, aside from the fact that I walk by there on a near-daily basis? Because last night, as I was leaving my beloved Walgreens (Brock, I know you love this Walgreens as much as I do) there was an absolutely fucked-up out of her mind gutter punk beating the living hell out of the wall with its receiver before grabbing her falling-down pants, reeling back on to the sidewalk, and going at it all over again. Who else averted their eyes and walked quickly through her path of rage, praying for their own safety en route? I know somebody did.

Many places are getting rid of pay phones since lots of people carry cellphones. You'll find pay phones in transit hubs (the airport, train stations, the bus terminal). Most hotels will probably keep one or two booths as an amenity, but many restaurants and bars have pitched theirs. Heck, what's more important to a cash-only dive bar? A payphone or an ATM in the corner by the restrooms?

There are actually two stand-alone phone booths over on 24th/Capp. Yes, they are operational. If you want to check out some of the best local Mission crazies, stand around those phones for a few minutes.
