This was the scene tonight in the Castro with hundreds of extras helping to make movie magic. If you've signed up to be in this film on Friday, remember it's BYOC (Bring Your Own Candle).

Am I the only Castro resident who's sick and tired of the filming? They're really pissing me off.

Bah humbug. It was fantastic last night. There is such a buzz in the neighborhood. They will be gone soon enough.

I was glad to be a part of it last night, but man, that's a long night of hanging out for brief bursts of activity. I'm signed up for the candlelight vigil, and I don't think I'll go (but, you never can tell).

I wrote up my extra experience on my website.

I left after about an hour. It was cold even in my flannel clone outfit.

I asked a cop if the MUNI station was open and he answered, " how do I know?- I'm an actor."

After been out there until 10:30 we ended up in 440/toadhall with about 30 other "extras" we meant to just go in for one and go back out, but well, you know.

You can see me in that photo -- I'm in an orange poncho, just down and to the right from the "Freaking Fag Revolution" poster.

I stayed til the bitter(ly cold) end. Brrr.

The recreation image of Harvey Milk with a bullhorn in front of the Castro Theater for the Van Sant "MILK" Movie is not a historical fact... The movie also claims that the event depicted, was in response to Anita Bryant's anti-gay victory in Wichita Kansa... Not so either! By osmosis, I became a Historian that faithful evening... and it was in response to Anita Bryant's anti-gay victory vote in Dade County Florida. The gathering turned into a Impromptu March, starting at the Catholic Church a block away from today's Harvey Milk Plaza. Havey never stopped to speak in front of the Castro Theater but used his bullhorn to yell 'OUT OF THE BARS AND INTO THE STREETS!" The recreation scene also shows many signs at Castro and Market Street, but there were only a few. We marched down Market Street turning at Polk past City Hall, and downtown to Union Square where Harvey spoke to a crowd of over thousand people. It was there that Harvey used his bullhorn to speak to the crowd. I snapped several photos as Harvey Spoke and one of them is now part of Gay History as it HAPPENED.
It was an image of Harvey, with a candle in one hand and the bullhorn in the other and a SAVE OUR RIGHTS sign in the background. The biggest cheer that night came when a young black lady climbed a flag pole and unfurled a "GAY POWER" flag. I took my film over to Associated Press on Market Street, and the flashed that image on their wire service throughOUT the USA. Years later, Randy Shilts used it in his book about Harvey "THE MAYOR OF CASTRO STREET". I would like to recommend a web-site dedicated to the REAL history of the Castro by those who where there at the time it was HAPPENING and not a recreation.

Take a peek at
http://thecastro.net/street/memoriespage/pritikin/scene05.html for the whole story of that night and while you are there visit the complete
site. It's a trip worthwhile taking and it tells it like it was... Jerry

WOW!, what a great website. This is an old post though, so not as many folks might read it, hopefully Brock sees it, and puts it on a newer post. Great photos. Thanks.
