Here at SFist, we hate to be killjoys, but sometimes all we can do is just pass along the news. Apparently, your sex toys may not be safe to use (and we don't mean it in a Catholic "masturbation is bad for you" kind of way). According to Green Daily, the plastics used in your favorite sex toys have a compound called phthalates in it--which is what gives plastic its softness. However, there are certain health risks associated with phthalates, including (as Green Daily points out) "damage [to] the liver and kidney and genital abnormalities." Yikes!
While this has been in the news before, this is the first we've heard about it. An interesting aside is that sex toys aren't regulated because they are considered "novelty items" that are not for use. Yeeeah. Okay.
Rather than throw out all those phthalates-laden sex toys, though, Babeland suggests practicing safe sex with your toys and using a condom. Huzzah!

Zucchini is still safe, right?
Phthalates are mostly found in kids toys - they make plastic soft - and are really only dangerous to kids. So don't let your kid chew on your dildo.
Also, Fiona Ma's Toxic Toys bill just passed - it bans the sale of products containing phthalates in San Francisco or maybe all of California. (She didn't write the bill, though. She just borrowed it from Ruskin , who wasn't able to get it passed.)
Goddammit, Fiona Ma is worthless.

Really? So women who intend to bear children should go ahead and build up toxics like phthalates and pass it along to their children? Probably not.
Phthalates aren't mostly found in kids toys. They're in quite a variety of soft-plastic products.
violet blue has a good write up on her site: http://www.tinynibbles.com/unsafe.html
Luckily for me, I'm remaining child-free, so bring on the rabbit!!! These trix are not for kids.
I forget how horrifying the rabbit truly looks.

"Zucchini is still safe, right?"
Yes, as long as you wash it first.
And, of course, afterwards...
