As usual, Google's come up with a way to make everyone's lives easier. The details of Google Transit Feed Specification are a bit technical and engineer-y, but the upshot for transit riders is this: you can plan your trips with Google Transit on more agencies than before, and with even better results. BART's participating in the project, which is good news for BART riders. Muni is not, which is bad news; but Muni riders are used to that.
Muni declined to comment when we asked them why they weren't participating. So we'll have to assume it's because their engineers are already in way over their heads; and nobody there has any idea what they're doing, and they can't hire someone who does because they Mayor spent all their money.
UPDATE! We asked Muni for comment last Friday, the 25th; and we'd originally intended to give them a week to respond. But we accidentally hit "publish" today instead. Rather than un-publish the post, we'll leave it up; and we'll let you know if they ever wind up getting back to us.

Was Muni's response, "What's is this Google?"
I like how the surly bus driver attitude runs through the whole of MUNI.
the rumor I heard was that google transit was looking for places to try out their new tech, and approached several agencies, including MUNI but it was Portland's transit system that ended up being first....
it's a really interesting system...it certainly is easier to use than "511 is a Joke"...
