Penn to Hit Castro Bars as Milk Shooting Starts

castro%20is%20changing.jpg

Undergoing a procedure to erase 30 years from its face, the Castro neighborhood is going retro, circa 1978, for the filming of Gus Van Sant's Harvey Milk biopic, Milk, which starts shooting this week. Already the Castro Theatre, right, and boutique shop Given, formerly Milk's camera store / campaign headquarters, are being renovated to get that '70s vibe. Rumor has it that Castro Street between 18th and 19th streets (i.e., the staphicenter) will be closed on Thursday. We'll update with more info as it comes in.

For those of you who don't know the story, San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk was "the first openly gay man elected to any substantial political office in the history of the planet," according to Time. In 1978, SF Supervisor Dan White, while under the duress of creaming filling, shot and killed Milk and Mayor George Moscone. Then, thirty years later, your editor was deemed too morbidly obese and/or ugly to appear as an extra in his biopic.

The movie will star Sean Penn (as Milk), Matt Damon Josh Brolin (as Dan White), and our very own Tom Ammiano (as Tommy Ammiano). No word yet as to whether or not Dianne Feinstein will even be written into the film as a character, but...it doesn't look good for the former supe. Or so says IMDB and Wikipedia. Crestfallen doesn't begin to describe how we feel about this slight.

cool!

now that the dollar is falling in value, filming in Canada isn't so great anymore...

It's about time. Those "got milk" ads have been going on forever.

Since the former camera shop is being talked about:

It became "The Skin Zone" soap etc store after Milk was elected/killed. Kisses to heaven for the former trans manager who was named Jessica Clark. She was a well known character in the store and Castro whom we should not forget.

Jessica called herself The Mother of Castro Street, and has been sainted by the Sister of Pepetual Indulgance, namely, "The Patron Saint of Gender Identity"

Jessica, may you be with soap guru Dr Bonner in a buble bath in heaven.

She died last year or year B4?

I think it was the year before.

Anyway, totally. She was a well of good info and was the one who introduced me to Dr. Hauschka Skin Care. I've never looked back since.

Jessica, and the store, will be missed.

you know, i've always sorta liked sean penn in that way that i've always like ray liota. i'm sorta attracted to the dark side and i think he might be a serial killer. my roommate said she saw him (with vaughan... early don't care about spelling) at a club before xmas. and he creeped her out big time because that demonic stare he has apparently has got nothing to do with his acting. its like perma-creep.

Just to show how intolorent people still are about trans people, no matter how fab they are---

Jessica died almost broke. She could never find another job after the skin zone.

Her sainted name is, "Saint Mariposa Ambrosia"

"Mariposa" is spanish for butterfly and slang in many countries for "fag"

Brock,
I like the new Avatar. You look butch in the hoodie. The Jackie Onasis sun glasses balance it out.
