It actually actually actually changes from street to blvd at number 1100 which is at Van Ness per Thomas Bros map book. Also remember that eastbound it turns into Starr King Wy for one block at Franklin.

regarding pronunciations, can someone give me a phonetic spelling of portola? i know natives who swear it's "poor-tuh-la" (emphasis on por) and others who claim it's "poor-toll-uh" (emphasis on tol). any ideas?

The change occurs at Gough, where eastbound Geary becomes O'Farrell. The definition of Boulevard: A broad city street, often tree-lined and landscaped. So you see, once eastbound Geary passess Gough, it is lined with drug addicts, rather than trees, and therefore it becomes a "Street."
