From the SFist Inbox: Geary...?

geary%20is%20sybil.jpg

It wouldn't be SFist if it weren't rife with errors and bipolarity-tinged posts. But we got word of an especially egregious error we made today--something, we're ashamed to admit, we never knew. From the SFist inbox:

Re: Starbucks post, it is Geary Boulevard west of Gough, Geary Street east of Franklin. Thanks.

Now, we know how to correctly pronounce "Noe," "Gough," and "Montandon." We know to always pretend that the SF Green/Progressive Party is inclusive to all types. And we know the way to San Jose. (Har. Eh. Sorry.) What we didn't know was that Geary had a split personality.

Please advise.

So between Gough and Franklin, it's...?

Geary Way? Rue de la Geary?

I have no idea.

and on one map I saw, "geary expressway"!

On the map I just checked, it appears that Van Ness is where the name change takes place.

Google neatly puts the border at Van Ness, as seen via Street View here.

but they could be wrong

The screencap from Sybil reminds me of what Gavin's freudian slips must sound like ...

"Vanessa, what's the matter?"

"I'm NOT Vanessa!"

I bet ToDo has the appropriate name on its map. Heh.

"geary" means diarrhea in japanese ...

well ... at least phonetically.

The change occurs at Gough, where eastbound Geary becomes O'Farrell.

The definition of Boulevard: A broad city street, often tree-lined and landscaped.

So you see, once eastbound Geary passess Gough, it is lined with drug addicts, rather than trees, and therefore it becomes a "Street."

@ Generic

The screen cap of Sally Field reminds me of one of my favorite Sawyer quips from LOST

"Trouble at the mill, Norma Rae?"

regarding pronunciations, can someone give me a phonetic spelling of portola? i know natives who swear it's "poor-tuh-la" (emphasis on por) and others who claim it's "poor-toll-uh" (emphasis on tol). any ideas?

It actually actually actually changes from street to blvd at number 1100 which is at Van Ness per Thomas Bros map book.

Also remember that eastbound it turns into Starr King Wy for one block at Franklin.

You can't argue against the Thomas Brothers.

Wasn't it sad when Jim Thomas killed Artie Thomas back in '91?

Bob, I've only heard the former used a number of times so I'm deeming your latter pronunciation example of Portola to be correct by popular usage.

PORT-oh-la

Ka-BREE-oh= Cabrillo

My favorite Ulloa = Uooh-YO-ah

More fun with pronounciations, sorry I don't know how to spell phonetically, any help?

Duboce = Du boch y? Du boys? Du bock?

Mariconsoy: Nope. It's por ToLL uh

por TOLL ah
west POR tul
du BOS
ya LO ah

goff
NO-eee

manys has it right on all counts, though i would've said "ull-OH-uh". i stand corrected.

BER-nal!

For the first few weeks I lived here I never actually heard anyone actually say the word "Taraval" and I was really nervous about getting it wrong in case it was ta RAHV al or something

It's Ca-brillo, brillo like the pad.

Cabrillo was Portuguese, so no Castilian Spanish here.
