Dennis Richmond and His Moustache Sail Off Into the Sunset
While watching Seinfeld this evening (the awesome, awesome episode involving double-dipping and Teri Hatcher's breasts), we were teased during a news break to tune into a very special episode of the KTVU 10 o'clock newscast. Intrigued, we watched something else instead. So what did we miss? Dennis Richmond announced that he is going to retire. His last broadcast will be May 21, 2008.
To say Richmond has been a mainstay would be an understatement. We've lived here for years and we can't really remember a time when Richmond wasn't on TV. We also can't remember a time when people didn't look at the redness in his eyes and wonder if he was stoned all the time. Richmond, who is 65 (!) has been with KTVU for forty years and has anchored the 10 o'clock news since 1976.
Dennis was a rare TV news anchor in that he was actually good. He was serious and treated the news seriously-- we can't ever remember him cracking a joke let alone a smile and he never did all that cheesy happy talk that mars too many a newscast. He just sat there and read the news. In fact, you could kind of say he was kind of boring, but in a good way. As a result KTVU was a bit of a throwback news show, kind of the way newscasts are supposed to be, or were supposed to, or what have you.
Good luck, Dennis--things won't be the same without ya!

"Dennis was a rare TV news anchor in that he was actually good. He was serious and treated the news seriously-..."
WAS, don't you mean IS??
he was the black ron burgandy
i think he just had a serious health scare
i'll miss his gruff looks at his producers or co-anchor whenever they screwed up
always entertaining
I was in an American History class at UCLA and they showed stock footage of Harvey Milk's murder. Dennis Richmond's fro was bangin and more than a few kids yelled his name.
I've also seen him at Chinese new year and he is a super pimp.
Is he moving to Florida with Leslie Griffith?
Man I'm really gonna miss Dennis Richmond. So many nights tuning in at 10, totally stoned, and his TV presence always hooks me in. It's like we're on the same wavelength.
"John, this is Dennis Richmond. I have some important information I think you should listen to.""Ok man, I'm totally here with you."And his cast of female co-anchors. The man has an Ike Turner like control over them. His pimp hand is always strong. I think Elaine Corral is just now coming out of hiding since leaving Dennis KTVU.
They'll probably replace him with some doughey, roundfaced spoiled white boy from Orange County who drives a 350Z and hits on my girlfriend at Matrix.
Does he still have the hiccups?
Aw, man... Richmond is my favorite anchor ever.
Plus, who else could get a line like this in their Wikipedia article;
"He is characterized by his omnipresent mustache and deep rich voice"
Oh, *baby*
One source has told me he walks with a permanent limp. Another source has told me Dennis Richmond has turned his limp into a total pimp swagger. He will be missed.
Ooh! I want to snag an invite to his retirement party; it'll be just like Olde San Francisco there. Just the right setting for an episode of Murder, She Wrote...the jealous coworker finally being promoted to replace Dennis; our Mayor's girlfriend as one of Jessica's endless stream of nieces/nephews; Jessica's old college friend, Nan McEvoy, tossing back the schnaps...
Hey, didn't even see the JB Fletcher shout-out in the tyger post. Same wavelength, baby!
NOOOO! Dennis Richmond is the embodiment of gravitas. News needs him. I was addicted to watching Dennis when I lived in SF. I still remember when he said the words "freak dancing" during a broadcast. It was like the voice of God declaring, "THERE WILL BE NO FREAK DANCING IN PLEASANTON." Oh, it was a beautiful moment.
That's too bad he's retiring. He is good.

I'll honestly miss this guy, he was about the only thing saving local TV news from being a complete joke.
