I don't understand why this isn't bigger news. I go to school here in the middle-west, and no one knows about it. There hasn't been an article about it in the Chicago Tribune yet. When I see these stats it looks like a big problem though...

@mariconsoy: Deadly new form of MRSA emerges

A deadly strain of the superbug MRSA which can lead to a FLESH-EATING form of pneumonia has emerged.

'These multi-drug resistant infections often affect gay men at body sites in which skin-to-skin contact occurs during sexual activities.'

Research suggests it may be more prevalent among the gay community - the gay San Francisco district of Castro appears to have been hardest hit.

Not to threadjack, but has anyone seen the San Francisco Emotion Map?

Oddly, I see no homo-centric staph data on this one.

I hope that my gym is taking precautions. It's in the 9.6% corridor, for what that's worth.

Another end result of our animal [fowl and fish too] food chain being overloaded with antibiotics. All part of "factory farming"

We gradually become overloaded with them over time, so when we need help from a bacteria killer, they can't work.

I saw a piece on Mersa [MRSA] where it's shown it is transmitted by indirect contact which can be just from a dirty towel in a locker room.

Eeek. Bugs are all over me. They're covering me.

Time for a lilac scented clorox bath.

Okay, I can kinda see the Richmond as a gay outpost. Sorta.

But Visitacion Valley in the lower right?

WTF?

I had to visit SFgate.com to figure out what the heck the percentages were.

The percentages ON the map refer to male same-sex couples living in the area.

Which I guess is one way to tell a neighborhood is gay, but otherwise seems semi-unrelated to the specifics of the staph infections.

I would assume same-sex couples would be at less risk than gay singles (not that couples don't have affairs, but still).

Anyone feel me on that?

It should be noted that Treasure Island numbers compare very favorably to districts other than the Castro.
