It takes a little time to change behavior, but it will happen. In Ireland, bringing your canvas bags with you is the norm now, it is interesting to see it evolve.

I know, when I say "I don't need a bag" at Walgreens the checkout agent looks at me like I have bats flying out of my nose - BUT - the Walgreens downstairs DOES have a special trash can for recycling plastic bags. I use it.

Change your behavior. Bring your own bags or carry it out. Death to plastic bags!

The paper bags are useful for taking out the recycling.

But yeah, if the supes thought people would just magically start remembering to bring their own canvas bags every time, they were smoking something.

What irritates me is when the cashiers automatically start shoving your shit into double-plastic bags when they see you standing right in front of them, waving a canvas bag. Walgreens employees are the WORST.

And if this city really wants to be green, they need to ban plastic bags PERIOD. No special exemptions for Chinatown or anyone else. Not that the pink bags decorating the infernal ficus in front of my building aren't completely charming...

Only the grocery stores have stopped handing out plastic bags. All the small markets still hand out white/pink bags. So does Walgreens, though they will have to stop with the plastic bags this spring.

At my local Safeway, hardly anyone bothers to bring their own bags, and they just have everything loaded up into paper bags. And studies have shown that in landfills, paper doesn't degrade. It lasts essentially forever, just like plastic.

While the plastic bag law was a step in the right direction, in its current form, it does little to protect the environment. Have you noticed how much cleaner our streets have become? Neither have I.

You better watch it. Those old ladies with the pink bags are fearless. I was on BART once and this fearsome-looking skateboard punk (well, fearsome by Pittsbug-Bay Point line standards) was taking up four seats, and this pink bag totin' old lady came up and swatted him with a newspaper until he gave up a seat for her. And then she sat down next to him. And he behaved himself.

Betcha some of em might have gouged a few eyeballs out or worse during the Japanese Occupation.

Yes, PPBs [pink plastic bags] have just been banned all over China effective June 08. They recognize how bad they are for all the toxic fish etc that they are raising.

"China will ban retailers from giving free plastic shopping bags to consumers starting in June to curb waste and reduce pollution. China’s cabinet, the State Council, calling the excessive use of plastic bags a “serious” waste of resources"
NYT

They do come in handy at times here-

Mostly, I can prepare myself for battle when I see an old woman holding one when she and I are about to board say the 30 or the 9x- especially if she has a cane. There are no holes barred. I eye elbow in defense back from bag or cane smashes, but I still often lose the seat race. How do they gain the sudden strength? Ginseng? Mysterious Chinese mushrooms?

Not a bad idea, Jameth. But if you want to be a green local, stop by Little City Meats and get one of their new cloth bags. No Idahoans carrying those.

I get that but if the point was to make light of the law or compliance with it ("screw landfill reduction"), it would help. If the point was just that it was a cool photo, I'm on board.
