It's Like Thunder, Lightning, the Way You Knock Out Our Power Lines Is Frightening

lightning.jpg

Further proof that the Richmond is where it's at - unless, of course, you like dry bath towels - last night the good folks in the OR witnessed a reportedly "green" light show in the sky during the storm. (Here in SOMA at SFist HQ, we saw a few dangerous puddle formations. Terrifying.) In our comments section, which we implore you to use liberally, a few readers chimed in on last night's electric action:

  • At about 8:00pm we saw three green flashes like lightning in the western sky. Then we heard sirens from from our local fire station (26th & anza) and other stations close by. Anyone know what happened?

  • Lightning struck some power lines in the Richmond District
  • Wow. They were bright green...unlike any lightning strikes we've ever seen. Thanks for any info.

Anyway, the Lord's wrath lit up the sky a little before 8 p.m. last night, going so far as to drop four power lines onto the street between 43rd and 44th Avenues, according to PG&E. CBS 5 claims that the outage following the power line failures affected "residents from Fulton St. to Geary Boulevard and anywhere from 12th Ave. to Great Highway."

No fair. You western residents get all the fun. And, yes, dear transplants, we understand that it takes only a strong breeze to freak out many a Californian. But our aggressive and annoying weather sensitivity is our God-given right. Embrace it.

Also, it looks like we'll enjoy the rain until Sunday at the latest. Stay Arrid extra dry, folks.

This was pretty eerie. I was driving around there around midnight last night and the whole sector was dark. "Looks like a blackout," I said to my companion. "They never call the cops out like this when the lights go out in MY neighborhood." Seriously, it was like they were looking for a prime tasing candidate for blocks and blocks. I never did get down to the Zoo to see if there was any midnight paparazzi to ogle.

Oh, and the green is probably because the lightning struck copper. Copper burns green, and lightning actually strikes from the ground up, so it would suck the green into the sky (in a manner of speaking).

Yup, it sho was dark. And boring. And cold. And we natives may be startled by a breeze, but we laugh when the very soil beneath us rises and falls.

And of course the power always comes back on at four in the morning. I'm at Balboa and La Playa and saw the lightning.

43rd and 44th avenues are correct. Cross-street is Anza. PG&E crews were still out there when I left my home at 9:30AM.

Power was restored at 4:30AM

Damn, wish I'd been there. Awesome storms are the only thing I miss about my crap red state homeland.

Phooey. I'm glad my power didn't go out (being on the other side of Geary) but I'm bummed I missed the light show. Then again, it seems I slept through the whole thing so I probably would've missed it anyway...

Try reading a magazine with a glowstick.
