New Tunes Tuesday #14

sweeney.jpgNew York Times, in their weekly Critic's Choice: New CDs column, introduced us to four different musicians we have never heard of: Lupe Fiasco, Jaheim, Birdman and Steve Lehman. We think that it has nothing to do with the "critic's choice", but rather there is nothing significant to write about this week - seems like a repeat of last week. We're patiently waiting for the January releases of: Radiohead (the actual CD), Kate Nash, Sia, Vampire Weekend and Idina Menzel. For now, it might be best just to reflect on your favorite album of 2007 - you'll find out ours soon enough.

STANDOUTS:
1. Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street - Complete Edition Soundtrack: Though we aren't completely sold on the musical itself (we have only seen the new John Doyle production and it wasn't our favorite) we sorta have a crush on movie musicals. Plus, the movie will be as literal as you get which is very different from the recent metaphorical production that just came through San Francisco. It's Sondheim - we know he's brilliant but paired with the likes of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, we are hoping it becomes genius. You can win a pair of tickets to Thursday's screening here.

Word. I wasn't at all sold on the John Doyle production. I know Sondheim is a big fan now of his works getting stripped down. (An intimate Follies? Yeech.) But I think he works best spilling out over the stage.

But I do hear that the film version is swell. Looking forward to it. (Although HBC's "Worst Pies In London" does leave something to be desired.)

Saw Company on Broadway and LOVED it! It worked...

I just thought you had to have some major background knowledge of the show before seeing the John Doyle production and personally I think that's a no-no. Since I had no background knowledge (except singing Jo-Anna over and over in my musical theatre class) I think I missed most of the metaphors and kept thinking, "What the hell just happened?"

Looking forward to this bloody, murderous Christmas opening... (seems more appropriate for Halloween than Christmas...)

The folks at Gillette are fools for not doing a merch tie-ins.

Does anyone else see the creepy similarity between the pic on this post and the one right above it?
