SFist Photo: Come See the New Chevy Volt Plug-In

Now this is just a show car, but it's GM's effort at building a cheap, practical plug-in hybrid. Yes, they were working on something like this ten years ago, and yes, Toyota has the lead in this arena. But the people at General Monkeybusiness could have a winner on their hands if they put their minds to it. This is a special tour just for the San Francisco area plus three other cities. However, all you can do is just look at it and get a brochure, or maybe a free T-shirt. Check it out if you are around Fisherman's Wharf or Pier 39. (Believe that's where the Volt will be instead of Union Square today.)

Just don't call it a "plug-in hybrid" even though that's what it is. Zoom zoom.

That is a pretty car. Will the same car be going into production or will it be styled totally different? Why don't US carmakers make more cars like this instead of boring routine crap like the Taurus, Grand Am, etc.

 

Thank goodness an American car maker is putting more emphasis on alternative fuel or hybrid vehicles.

 

The styling has already changed somewhat. It will become more upright, yet more areodynamic.

Toyota says that GM is talking nonsense. GM hasn't yet committed to building it.

It's bogus. We've got a picture on the Yahoo group of what's under the hood, 3 golf cart batteries and a 36v motor. Barely two years since GM arrested would-be buyers of the EV1, and crushed every one, who is going to believe them now? If they wanted to build one, they could do it now -- or they could just have let the EV1 live.

We drive today the oil-free Toyota RAV4-EV, which Toyota sold to us freely and without tricks, last sold in Nov., 2002.

But GM would not sell even ONE EV1, they insisted on destroying them all, and now come up with this crappola -- a prototype that can't go faster than 15 mph, and excuses about why they can't do it.

See the videos -- we already have a VOLT-equivalent with better than 100 miles all-electric range! GM is lying about not being able to do so.

GM is not telling the truth about the EV1 and its past history, and is not telling the truth about the battery. We drive an EV using 10-year old technology with over 100 miles range! And got the pics to prove it.

Thanks for the info - two weeks ago we watched, "Who Killed the Electric Car" and learned a lot! I can't wait till the day I don't have to go to the gas station.

 

Well, it IS a concept car. GM says maybe they'll make Volts starting in a few years. They'll lose money on each one.

Many people said they would lease the EV1, but few people actually did, even with all the subsidies the lessors enjoyed. GM promoted the car in regions where it would perform well (non-hilly areas, for one) and with people that would be good owners (rich families that already had a car, etc.) Having said that, there wasn't a whole lot o' demand.

There are many valid reasons why GM wouldn't sell the cars for road use. If GM had been more committed to battery power maybe they wouldn't have listened to their lawyers as much but oh well.
