We were doing a little stumbling the other night and came across this curious flyer that was photographed at 18th and Capp, by Chris Brennan: "Lose a Small Furry Animal? Not a Dog or Cat. Call Scott: 415_______."
Here's what Chris had to say about it:
Funny thing is we knew the animal in question who was indeed not a dog or a cat, but a lost ferret. I think the ambiguity was twofold - for one I've been told ferrets are illegal to own in California; and secondly to allow the proper owner to identify the pet in question.
We hope the "small furry animal" made it back home! (We'll update when we hear back from Chris.)

Ferrets are totally illegal in California. Something about a superhigh incidence of rabies.
No, ferrets are illegal in California because CA Fish and Game has them classified as a wild animal. They have them confused with the black-footed ferret, which is a completely different animal. The domesticated ferret has been domesticated for about as long as cats have been.
It makes about as much sense as outlawing domestic cats for fear of bobcats.
Rabies is extremely rare in ferrets - they seem to have a natural immunity -- and there has never been a documented case of transmission of rabies from ferret to human.
