Yeah, the spread offense has not panned out in the NFL. I think NFL defenses are too skilled to let that little gimmick work well. June Jones employs the run-and-shoot at the University of Hawaii, and I wonder if Colt Brennan will have the same problems.

Urban Meyer coaches Florida now (he coached Smith at Utah) so I think Tim Tebow's future success in the NFL is questionable at best, despite the fact he's one of the Heisman favorites.

Somewhere online is a theory about Smith, that basically Smith played and excelled in a spread offense. So what did Nolan try and do with him? Make him one of those QBs who "manage" the game instead of the kind of QB who just chucks and chucks the ball. Wouldn't it make sense that if you draft a QB who is really good in a certain kind of offense to try and install that kind of offense instead of making him play a completely different offense?

Then again, there's also the theory that spread offenses are too much of a gimick and that they usually make lousy NFL QBs.

Alex Smith took a 12-0 Utah team to the Fiesta Bowl, crushing Pittsburgh; that Utah team was the first non-BCS conference team to play and win a BCS game.

He came in fourth in Heisman voting, but considering the lackluster NFL careers of many Heisman winners (and runners-up) in recent years, I'm not sure the Heisman thing is all that it's cracked up to be.

That said, I'm not even sure if Alex Smith has the highly-prized ability to find the open receiver.

Oh, and Andy Lee is the best punter in the NFL! Lots of opportunities this year!!

Ah it's nice seeing the Panthers on SFist and on local TV.

However I did grow up a 49ers fan mostly due to techmo bowl and mike cofer.

I gave up watching the Niners for the season after the Seahawks threw a no-hitter (several weeks ago).

Perhaps Mike Nolan is an idiot. Perhaps Alex Smith is the wrong fit. Perhaps the team needs a real offensive coordinator. However, I really think the team is doomed to mediocrity without change of ownership.

Denise and John are nothing like Eddie. N-O-T-H-I-N-G.
