This Week in Le Rock: Nov. 26 - Dec. 2

foggyholiday.jpg Judging from the range of performers this week, there is something for everyone. Starting first, in our weekly recommendations, is New Zealand singer-songwriter, Brooke Fraser. Prior to this post, we knew nothing about this accomplished 19 year-old but a quick visit to her MySpace page and we were hooked. Tuesday, you can catch this gorgeous, pop-writing sensation at Cafe du Nord. If not, download her latest release, Albertine on iTunes.

Wednesday, we are welcoming Faun Fables home from their recent tour in Austria and Switzerland. They will be playing with Australian legend, Daevid Allen (which we here is Faun Fables' dream - Hooray for dreams coming true).

If you aren't into great Australian pop songs, then you can always check out the overplayed-yet-still-talented emo stars, Plain White T's and Fall Out Boy headed to the San Jose Events Center on Thursday night. Okay, okay, if you don't want to spend your Thursday night with 13 year-old girls then be sure to see Luce, a five-piece band from San Francisco. Word is, they will be featuring some new music on Thursday night.

The weekend offers several different favorites starting with Friday: Iron & Wine and Califone over in Oakland and Voxtrot (watch "Firecracker" here) and Division Day at Bimbo's. We will be partying it up with local bands: Cold Hot Crash (Live 105's 2006 Local Band Winner), Elephone, Built for Sea, and The Hundred Days. They will be featuring songs from their latest compliation, A Foggy Holiday. This seems to be the perfect way to start off the holiday season and support some great local bands.

Saturday night, we'll be at The Independent seeing our first show of L.A. based band, Great Northern (who are supporting Soulsavers.) Earlier this month, we sent a lucky winner to their show, but they are back and this time it's not to be missed.

The Lovemakers are playing at the Uptown in their hometown Oakland on Friday night ($15). While they are a fun band regardless of the venue, they really kick ass at their hometown shows.

Also, Dust Galaxy is playing Mighty on Saturday ($22 advance); this is Rob Garza's (of Thievery Corporation) new rock band.

And for those of you who don't know, Issa is the Artist Formerly Known As Jane Siberry. Since she is not with a major label anymore, a lot of folks probably don't know that she changed her name in the summer of 2006.

Thanks for all of the good tips - a lot of great music this week!!

I knew I was missing one: Dust Galaxy!! Pretty cool new CD that was just released on Nov. 6th.

Oh, here's another one: Von Iva is playing free at 12 noon on Friday, November 30th at Sproul Plaza (UC Berkeley).

A $20 show at Rickshaw? News to me.

It looks like most of the Rickshaw shows are just $8 but apparently this one is $20. Check out their website:

I just got this in the mail:

Mike Doughty brings The Question Jar Show to the Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco tomorrow night (Wed 11/28). The show's at 9 PM.

So far, "The Question Jar Show" has been an unusual, interactive, two-hour extravaganza every night, with Mike taking requests, debuting new
songs and answering questions that range in topic from songwriting to Soul Coughing to his past drug use to "What if burgers ate us?" Nearly all dates for the recently completed East Coast leg sold out, and most dates on the West Coast are sold out in advance too.
