American Football Spectacular: One Up, One Down

Reporting from spa-side in Santa Ana, it's your American Football Spectacular preview of the next rung of pain on the agony ladder that is the 49ers' '07 season.

The Trend Battle

The 2007 NFL season was the one before-which all the self-appointed experts abandoned the Arizona Cardinals as a franchise to break out and make a push for the NFC West title. For the past two years with the wacky Denny Green as Head Coach, the Cards were supposed to make a push. Both times, they burned and failed in a way that was both memorable and banal.

In 2007, based on the strong finish of their '06 season, the Niners were the popular pick to challenge the Seahawks. Lord knows we picked 'em to move up.

But they didn't, they haven't -- and this season -- they won't.

2007 is a flaming wreck strewn with busted expectations for the 2-'n-8 Niners. Now last year's sleepers are making their move.

Arizona finally got a clean restart after Denny Green by hiring Steeler offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt before this season. Have the notoriously penny-pinchin' Cardinal ownership actually managed to hire the right fella to turn the NFL's oldest franchise around?

Well, if any franchise's stability is one to be patterned-after, Whisenhunt's former employers in Pittsburgh are the very picture of stability.

Now the Cards are at 5-5, they've won their last two games, and are one game back from Todd's Seahawks in the NFC West race. They's movin' up in the world.

And on the other hand, there's the 49ers.

The Niners' downward trend couldn't be more pronounced. The franchise's on-the-field fortunes have reached terminal velocity like an ACME anvil dropped from a plane.

One team's movin' up in an unexpected way, and one team's moving down down down in a wholly unexpected way. And this Sunday, they'll meet.
