Go Back to Andorra, You Stupid Lithuanians!

While not nearly as exciting as receiving top honors as the best city for tourists to walk slow on city sidewalks, or best city in which singles can hump, on Monday the FBI just awarded SF as the city with the largest reported number of hate crimes in 2006. According to Bay City News (via SF Crime):

With a population of approximately 746,000, had a total of 94 reported hate crime incidents in 2006, including 25 that were race-based, 20 religion-based, 38 based on sexual orientation and 11 based on ethnicity, according to the FBI's Hate Crime Statistics 2006 report.

The largest city in the Bay Area, San Jose, (much to our surprise) had a scant 29 reported hate crimes in 2006. And Oakland. Had two. Well then.

At best, let's assume that San Franciscans are more inclined to report hate crimes. At worst, the self-righteousness and intolerance is part of our city's fuel spills over into the occasional hate crime all too easily. Anyway, congratulations, San Francisco, on having the courage to report hate crimes. Or shame on you, you big meanines.

Update: The Chroncile and Examiner both report that hate crimes are down from last year, but...we're still tops in the Bay Area for racial and homophobic zingers.

We deserve to be at the top of that list for the Elie Weisel attack alone.

There's just too much diversity here. We should down size.

SFGate has this story as well- but with a slightly different spin...

at least we're still no. 1. sf rulez!

How many of the reported hate crimes are convicted as hate crimes? Or have we totally giving up on the whole convicting thing?

maybe it's based on the number of people who hate crime

ha ha! that was funny jnice!

How many cities are even counting hate crimes as hate crimes versus just plain old crimes?

New York counts them as hate crimes. I learned that on Law & Order, uh-yup.

What I really want to know is whether or not they differentiate hate crimes committed by the crazies (like the cardboard sign guy who used to sit by the Hyatt at the start of Market Street before he attacked a female officer who asked him to take down some of his hate speech signs and got taken into the pokey) or if the numbers include the crazies' hate crimes.

Maybe it is just evidence that we have a lot more than the typical number of nut cases on the streets ... and yeah, they toss out racist, homophobic and just nasty stuff all the time ... all the time.

I am not surprised in the least at the number for either San Jose or San Francisco

People who move here have no idea the racial tension in the schools for instance.
