Leno vs. Migden: the Aftermath

Although we were much too busy with failed attempts at bit-part stardom to care about our civic duty this weekend -- a mistake we'll never make again -- we have read some interesting tidbits covering Saturday's Leno/Migden/some other candidate district 3 dance-off, or whatever. Ahem:
-- San Francisco Blog claims that "Senator Carole Migden...took the high road and chose not to engage in dirty politics." Well, that's no fun. And...skewed perhaps. Also, it seems Migden reapplied her lipstick several times during the debate.
-- According to LeftInSF, "The most awkward moment occurred at the end. To ensure fairness, Ms. Davis rotate who got to speak first. At the end, each candidate got 2 1/2 minutes to do their summary. She noted that Assemblymember Mark Leno was to go first. He stated that she was incorrect and State Senator Migden was to go first. Ms. Davis was very firm and repeated that it was his turn in the rotation to go first. Again, Leno objected and said that it was Senator Migden's turn to go first. Senator Migden used this opportunity to ask a show of hands if people thought that Leno was to go first. Ms. Davis was unyielding and Leno did his 2 1/2 minute closing statement." Now, now children.
-- KCBS notes "Leno told the crowd that he was not running for office as a personal attack on Migden." Of course not -- an open-handed slap to the face is so much easier and cost-effective.
-- And Paul Hogarth at Beyond Chron concludes that "[w]ith two top legislators running against each other, expect this race to get far nastier in the next few months...let’s hope the average voter won’t get so disgusted that they’ll just sit out the election. Because in the end, a race between two talented elected officials with similar politics should be a good thing – not a bad thing." We'll drink to that. Seriously.
-- And in related news, Phillip and Andrew had this to say, "Man overboard: Assemblyman Mark Leno found himself in Petaluma on Wednesday morning, having breakfast with John Cota, the bar pilot in the infamous Cosco Busan oil spill. Leno was at a charity breakfast for COTS (Committee on the Shelterless), and was seated with Cota and Cota's wife, Petaluma City Councilwoman Teresa Barrett. Leno wouldn't comment on his conversation with Cota other than to say, 'I think the guy is being set up to take the fall.'" Interesting.
Anyway, there seems to be no clear winner or loser here. Anyone care to chime in and tell us who really won? (And, no, we won't out any of you dear sock puppeters; that was a rule for only that once post, so let the smack-talk begin.)

It was fun. But please disregard the orange hue in the photo. The event was not staged by Stanlee Gatti.
On style points, Leno was strong out of the gate. He's clearly the better communicator and Migden has the habit of blaring her voice into the mike during moments that don't require it. But Leno pissed all his capital away during that bizarre insistence to have the last word. (But who was right? Mark or Belva? C'mon HMDC, rewind the tape! The fate of district 3 hangs in balance.)
On substance, the debate was a draw. I came and left in a state of profound ambivalence. Yes, Migden is guilty of ethics violations. But she made a more convincing case as to who was the more effective legislator. Yes, Leno would be a clean slate and a fine State Sentor. But the charges of careerism have a whiff of truth. In the end, it's pretty much a referendum on Migden.
I ache for the time when candidates could address each other directly rather than these odd kabuki dances around Robert's Rules of Order. Did anyone else see the Hillary/Obama parallels?
I support Migden ... Leno should go poaching outside of the LGBT community, in my opinion.
Did anyone notice at the debate that Carole Midgen was putting on her makeup while Mark Leno was closing?
Its really convienent that Carole's campaign manager cut that out but you can see in the video on youtube posted here...

when did Billy Idol start moderating debates in District 3?
