Surf's Up! Beaches Reopen

The sands of Marin and San Mateo have officially reopened to the public. (We recommend hitting the beach in the fall. There's something luxurious about walking on the beach, bundled up in winter clothing.) What's more, 50 wild birds have been cleaned up and released at Pillar Point Yacht Harbor at Half Moon Bay. But what's worse, "the spill has cost the U.S. government $1.4 million, money spent on operations by the Coast Guard, National Park Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration." Alas.

Also, while other areas are opening, Angel Island remains an area of concern due to its rocky and jagged shoreline geography. This, of course, makes clean up much more difficult.

In other oil spill news, contrary to what Cosco Busan crewmembers told authorities, federal investigators have yet to uncover any evidence of radar malfunction. A tissue of lies! Also, as we mentioned earlier, Newsom defended his weekend island getaway. Hang ten, dude. Hang ten.

Yay! The Hummercam is showing that Linda Mar is still heavily socked by fog, but come on down, surfers and beachgoers! That fog'll burn off by tomorrow.

Bah! I don't understand why the national park systems have to lose money because of someone else's mistake. They're already woefully underfunded - shouldn't the Cosco Busan have to help us out with that cashola?

by the time it's all said and done, i'm sure the owners of the ship will have spent millions to help pay for cleaning up what was totally out of their control. a 59 year old fuckup still allowed to pilot these ships into well known immobile objects.

what a fuck nut!

i actually feel bad for the owners of the ship. they are victims here too.

I was working on the cleanup today at Ocean Beach and the local officials there were furious that the feds have decided to reopen the beach tomorrow. It is not "clean" by any means, there were several hundred people out there picking up gooey tarballs today. Depending on the weather and tides, varying amounts of oil has been washing up each day.

congrats, california, on your swift response to yet another disaster. i, dunno, people criticize cali for its disasters but you guys hold your own.

no i am not being sarcastic and yes i think this nice not from chicago will get to the governator.

or something.
