That ain't a dek, that's a hed! And can you blame 'em for writing headlines like that? There's only so many times you can write "Residents show support for local measure" before keeling over from boredom. Two people saying something negative: that's criticism! Dissent! Drama!
But you're right, "Headline Writers Are Haters!" is a pretty awesome headline.

Also, totally. Headline (and hed/dek) writing can bug big time. They should hire someone specifically to do that job. I know I would.
