Pulling Out the Ol' Oil-Resistant Doc Martens
After a few days of obsessively keeping up with reports of the oil spill clean-up efforts, we gathered up our oldest, least fashionable, and/or most mishapen clothes, along with a pair of rubber gloves and trash bags, and set out for Ocean Beach today.
It turns out our old Doc Martens are oil-resistant -- we just might have to invest in some new soles for those disaster-ready babies.
Check out more photos and details after the jump!
We got to the beach around 12:30 this afternoon, and it was beautiful weather out there. There were lots of heavy-gear-wearing, trained volunteers/ workers lackadaisically walking along scooping up oil globs, several plain-clothed volunteers like us wearing gloves and scooping up oil globs, and a ton of regular people walking around -- several of them barefoot, along with a few dogs.
The nearest Walgreens didn't carry kitty-litter scoops, like SF Surfrider and other sites had recommended. So, we scooped up the dime/quarter-sized oil globs with our gloves and threw them into our trash bags, which ended up blowing around like crazy when the wind picked up. The ranger came up to us at one point and assured us we weren't in trouble since the beach wasn't closed, and since we were using gloves.
Smelling the fumes emanating from our bag has left us with a headache all day. We didn't last much longer than an hour, but we plan to keep helping out as much as we can in coming months.
Check out friend of SFist James' Livejournal for awesome in-depth accounts of the clean-up over the last three days. Brock will be getting a post up soon highlighting James' photos and experiences.

Doc Maartens are also 'fat resistent' should there ever be a slaughter house emergency.
way to go sfist community. i think we are doing good, regardless of our political differences.
channel 4 just said it was a maiden voyage for that crew and that mechanical/electronic instruments have been ruled out as the cause. sounds like captain cota has a lot of splaining to do!
