Your Cosco Bucan Oil Spill Roundup

What started out yesterday morning as a PG-13, innocent little fender bender has now turned into our very own R-rated environmental disaster. Smashing. Here's a summary of today's oil spill-related chaos, followed by volunteering and clean-up information.

-- Today Gavin Newsom sent down word from wherever he's recovering from his hangover -- we kid. sort of -- that SF will get litigious on the agency or persons responsible for the 58,000 gallons of oil that spilled into the bay yesterday.

-- City officials have now warned people not to go into or boat on the Bay.

-- This Sunday's triathlon scheduled to take place on Treasure Island, where athletes swim in the bay as part of the race, could/should be canceled. "City officials said today it is canceled, but race officials said it's still on," so...here's to effective communication.

-- 26 hours lapsed between the time of collision and interview/alcohol test for the captain of the Cosco Bucan, we hear.

-- Birds and other animal life will suffer.

-- "The fumes at Pier 1 in the area of the Ferry Building were just overpowering," Port spokeswoman Renee Dunn said.

-- The Coast Guard can use your help with cleanup efforts. Baykeeper is putting together a list of interested volunteers. Visit www.baykeeper.org to get on that list!

-- Help authorities track the movement of the spill by contacting (private) cleanup company, The O'Brien's Group of Southern California at 985-781-0804.

-- For reporting oiled wildlife sightings, call 877-823-6926.

"sf will get litigous on the agency"
LITIGOUS!

SF should get down right MEDIEVAL on this agency!

"SF will get litigous on the agency"
Litigous...
SF should get down right medieval on this agency!
This is completely unacceptable. The response is unacceptable. That this happened is unacceptable.
The driver who apparently wasn't even on drugs or drunk has no excuse besides being completely incompetent.
The knuckleheaded asshole of a company who continued to employ him should be sued out of existance.

MEDIEVAL San Francisco!

Unconfirmed, but the SF Sailing mailing list I subscribe to named the bar pilot as John Cota.

does the pilot bar association carry insurance for their drunken members that should have been retired/fired long ago?

We could use water boarding on the pilot, since it's not torture, just "extreme duress" in the latest "newspeak" from the white palace. Use plenty of oil in the water they pour down his throat.

Speaking of medieval, WBing was used as early as the Spanish Inquisition. WB was a popular torture back then, since it left no messy body parts and blood to clean up.

US out of Iraq! Bring them home to kill container ship drivers!

Here we go people.....Exon Valdez Part II

Sorry for the intemperate post, I saw all the burning torches and pitchforks and thought this is SFGate.

BTW the Exxon Valdez was 11 million gallons, about 200 times larger than the size of this week's spill.

We are the "city by the bay", we live in "the bay area". The bay defines who we are as region. And now the bay that we love and defines who we is threatened by this oil spill. If anyone expects that people won't be upset or outraged by this would be sorely mistaken.
We have a duty to be outraged. We have a duty to pressure our politicians to do everything in their power to see that this is cleaned up as quickly as possible. We have a duty to support the efforts to clean this up whether it be our time or our wallets.
Not in our bay..
Unacceptable.

I don't think we should pay for this.

Tell Arnold to seize the Cosco Busan, otherwise the owners may never be found and held liable. Sell it at auction (eBay?) to pay for the costs to clean up our beloved bay and help restore effected animals.

I cried over the endangered brown pelicans and murres who died a terrible death from this mess.

Should we pay for this and let the owners get away with no liability? I think not.

Tell Arnold to seize the Cosco Busan:

Have there been any press releases from Cosco Busan admitting responsibility and offering to pay damages?

Oh, and this press release indicates that the pilot and crew were tested within the "required" 2 hours of the crash:

procedural fuckup?

the owners of the ship apologized yesterday and said they would do whatever it took to help clean it up. they are not the liable one's in my opinion. it is the fucked up organization that is the ship pilot bar association and their protection of this fucktard john j. cota!
