I can well afford fur. But I don't wear anything that causes an animal to suffer. Those who wear fur are shallow, vain wannabes. I am a total vegan. I do it for the animals. But it is the healthiest lifestyle. Let's start thinking about who we are hurting when we shop. Besides women in furs send out vain vibes. Ann Annapolis

I'll wear it if it's been dead for longer than the animal would have lived anyway. Thus, vintage and thrift store is probably OK. I have a great stole (I think it's fox) that I purchased for $20 at a Salvation Army somewhere on a road trip. It actually might have been in Vegas. I'm not going to get all sentimental about the anthropomorphic suggestions made by "seal pups smashed to death in front of their mothers." Is it any easier on their moms to see them mauled by polar bears?

Don't get me wrong. I'd never BUY fur. But a fling from the 1950's is a completely different story. People didn't know about conservation or animal rights then. Something described above is so obviously vintage I have no qualms with someone wearing it.

For those who think it's OK to wear or buy fur, please send me a ticket to your planet. Fur trade is a primary reason why the big cats in Africa are going bye-bye. Mink and other such small fur farm creatures are kept alive in small pens with no exercise. Seal pups in Canada are smashed to death in front of their mothers. There is no such thing as "humane" fur trade or production.

Baldguy - Same for me. Have a hard enough time finding shoes that my wife likes, let alone anything else! I don't think I have ever even known anyone that owns a fur....(if that doesn't say something about my social status, then I don't know what does.)

Give Grandma's stole back to the animals! If you would like to see that old fur put to a good use, donate it to The Humane Society of the United States' Coats for Cubs program. All of the furs received by The HSUS are sent to wildlife rehabilitators, who use the furs to warm and comfort orphaned and injured wildlife. as a vegetarian, no i don't wear fur (not that i could afford it if i wanted to...). but this post allows me to share a funny story: a friend of my grandfather's is extremely wealthy and lives in a too-large house, so she's looking to move into something smaller. over dinner one night, she explained that she had made an offer on a house, but had to withdraw it when she found out that "there just waaahsn't a closet laaahrge enough for my fuuuurs." oh man. classic rich old lady.

I have no interest in fur, but I'm a straight guy with a sensible wife, so there isn't much chance of me ever being in the market. However, I think you should watch one of the PETA videos before answering the question. Is it propaganda? Sure. But if you think there are "humane" or "sustainable" pelt farms out there...well, ignorance is bliss. I guess.

No on fur in general. But I wouldn't toss your grandmother's "fling" if I were you. If you DO want to get rid of it, send it my way!! Hey, they didn't know about animal cruelty back in the day, would be my excuse.

We can eat them, but we can't use their fur/skin/feather, unless it is a cow, since everyone loves leather, or some goose feathered pillow? I got no problem with fur as long as it is farmed and kept humanely until killed or caught from a sustainable population, same as I do for my meat. I supposed that what really bothers people about fur it that once you see it is quickly reminds you where it came from and in this day an age people do not like to be reminded of such things. They like their meat to come in little prepackaged trays that reminds them as little as possible that they are eating what was once an animal.

Not a fan of fur, unless you're in Alaska, Siberia, or anywhere else that you'd almost be silly not to wear it, and for the most part the entire animal is being consumed in some fashion (so to speak) anyway. But killing something only for its pelt is wasteful, especially if the animal is cute and furry (that always helps).
