Hey, Want Some Wood?

Branch
We saw this last night. As far as we can tell, that monster branch just cracked right off from the tree above. What knocked it off? Unlike some places, we're not suffering from high winds right now. Whatever the cause, we're just glad we weren't in that crosswalk when it came down.

Bonus question: where was this? SFist readers, this context-less nighttime photo might be the hardest "locate it" in SFist history...take a guess in the comments!

Since the branch fell on its own, the tree was not well maintained. Clue one.

Although there are some expensive cars parked in the background, the truck in the right foreground has its license plate taped over. That indicates the driver has a stolen car or is protecting him/her self during a drug run. That is clue two.

The is a dried blood stain with two rivlets on the street. Clue three.

Between the two cars in the background, we see people eating at an outdoor table. Clue four.

Clues 1-4 clearly indicate an up and coming area with restaurants; still a bit on the sleazy dangerous side.

The real clue is the fallen branch itself. It is clerarly from a rare species called "scrotuma masculum" which grows only in the Mission on side-streets near Valencia.

Good reasoning, mariconsoy, but not there. PRBurkley, you're close.

The curb cut was recently rebuilt with tactile grooves. We can't see if there are bumpy domes or not. It's a two way street in a flat area. There's parallel parking on both sides. It's in SFist so it must be somewhere in the hipster center of the city, not out in the Sunset or up on Russian Hill. There's no bus stop on this corner. Dan said it was near Haight and Fillmore.

I say it's Waller and Fillmore by Cafe Soleil.

I would have guessed Valencia too - because I saw a couple idiots chop down a tree just this morning next to Gracie Jui Jitsu. It wasn't a little sapling either. They used shovels to chip at and then pulled it over. I called 911.

This branch in the picture didn't just fall down. This is disgusting. It took years to grow that big.

Is this an epidemic?

it's true. cafe du soleil at fillmore and waller! i saw it last night.

Fillmore and Waller - that's it. Good job, guys. AJ, you should be a detective; I hear SFPD is hiring!

tps, you called 911 for some people chopping a tree down?

Yeah, I called 911. I was hesitant but the operator was interested and she kept me on the line getting info. It was 6:30am so I guess it was kind of slow as far as crime.

Anyway, you wouldn't call if someone was outside your apartment pulling down a tree? I'm not a green enviro nut, but it's not the middle of a forest or even a park. Trees are scarce in my neighborhood. Maybe I don't appreciate hardcore vandalism as much as I used to. I like slumming as much as the next hipster, but after a while the broken windows, ugly graffiti and human waste on the sidewalk loses its charm.

I didn't think it was possible, but you've managed to lower the bar of what's considered news on SFist.

I called 911 a couple of years back when some crazy dude was going up and down Fourth Street ripping large branches off the young trees in front of Moscone West.

Aside from the vandalism (those trees cost money, kids) it's pretty crazy behavior and then there's um... littering?

Kids, program the non-emergency number in your cell phones. I have the Berkeley non-emergency number, and use it for stuff like dogs running loose out in the middle of the street.

fillmore at alamo square. DO I WIN PRIZE
