SFist Tonight

lauragibson.jpg

-- Laura Gibson: We'd hate to genre-ize her lovely sounds, but neo-folk songstress Gibson -- who uses such tools as trumpet, viola, and musical saw in addition to her sublime vocal cords-- sings delicate siren songs that will have you crashing at her feet. She performs along with Musee Mechanique (Portland) and Snowblink starting at 8 p.m. at Rickshaw Stop; $8.

-- Lawrence Ferlinghetti: You know the man, the legend, the poet, the beret wearing of North Beach. (Okay, we saw him sporting it one time, but still.) Archnemesis to Michael Savage deserves your love and attendance tonight as he reads from his work, Poetry as Insurgent Art. Read more about it here (penned by none other than Silke Tudor. Yay!) Starts at 7 p.m. at City Lights; free.

-- Cries and Whispers (Viskningar och rop) (1972): One of the most beautifully shot movies about someone dying cancer, ever. This is Bergman is his finest. The movie is ripe with the color red, family drama, vaginal self-mutilation, and Liv Ullman as one of the most vile characters ever put on screen. See it tonight at 7 p.m. at the Castro Theatre; $6-9.
