New Tunes Tuesday #6
Each Tuesday we will feature new music that should (or whatever) be on your radar.
Standouts:
1. Serj Tankian - Elect the Dead: With his newest single, "Empty Walls," System of the Down's front man sings a passionate protest against the war. He cleverly sets his newest video in a daycare juxtaposing the violence of day-to-day objects such as silly-string, bubbles, helmets, doll houses and even a fun-dome filled with hundreds of plastic balls. His war metaphor comes to a climax at the end when he interjects a video of a fallen soldier's funeral; it becomes very real.
Looking at the fact that Serj Tankian's concert at Slim's on October 28th is already sold out, we venture to think that Tankian already has a huge following from his System of the Down days.
We've got two Serj Tankian care packages that we are going to give away. They are filled with Tankian's new CD (they might be autographed), t-shirts, posters, stickers and even a 7-inch record. (Each care package will have a mix of these prizes.) Take the jump to enter this fantastic giveaway.

2. Alison Krauss & Robert Plant - Raising Sand: Yes, that says, Alison Krauss and Robert Plant. We have the "God of Rock" and the "Goddess of Bluegrass" collaborating together to make Raising Sand. Now this isn't any ole' normal bluegrass or rock album. This album breeds musical genius - not hard for two of the music industries' most prominent performers. They venture into blues, alt-country, rock, bluegrass and folk - each time, with grace and style.

For fantastic prizes, more CD releases and of course our guilty pleasure, take the jump...
More Standouts:
3. The Forms - The Forms: With an 8.5 Pitchfork rating on their debut album, Icarus, The Forms' sophomore album has a lot to live up to. We can't compare and contrast the first and second album because we haven't heard Icarus but we can definitely tell you what we think of their latest release.
At first, it seems like just an average indie-rock CD with an upbeat pop sensibility to it. After a few listens, things begin to change. Suddenly you hear how the piano in their first song, "Knowledge In Hand" complements the vocals perfectly throughout. The vocal qualities seem good, but again, with further listen Alex Kween's vocals impressed us. Throughout each and every song, we discovered that there was nothing average about these Brooklyn natives - nothing average at all.
Enter the contest below to win a Serj Tankian's care package filled with all sorts of awesome stuff: (Two winners will be chosen when contest closes on October 25th. Form must be filled out in entirety.)
Remember, if you win, a notification will be sent to you at the email address you provide in the contest form, usually a day or so after the contest ends. So please keep an eye on your inbox and junk mail folder for a message from us. Thanks, and good luck!
Please Let Us Know What You Think About:
1. Dave Gahan - Hourglass: We loved us some Paper Monsters and now we get Hourglass. We can't be more thrilled.
2. Across the Universe: Deluxe Edition Soundtrack: Julie Taymor's visually-stunning Beatles infused deluxe edition soundtrack has been available on iTunes since Sept. 14th but finally the hard copy is being released.
3. Dwight Yoakam - Dwight Sings Buck: The press release asks, "Of course, you're thinking, when did Dwight not sing Buck?" Nope. Wasn't thinking that.
4. Carrie Underwood - Carnival Ride: With 380,714 friends on MySpace she is a force to be reckoned with. She's just not my friend.
5. Ryan Adams & The Cardinals - Follow the Lights: With seven tracks in total, only two tracks are new: "Follow The Lights" and "My Love For You Is Real." (They were both featured on the TV show, October Road.)
Guilty Pleasure for the Week:

We are in love with this Emmy Rossum's newest musical effort, Inside Out. (She played uber-popular role of Christine in the 2004 movie musical, Phantom of the Opera. She even got a Golden Globe nomination from it.) We didn't really enjoy the movie, but we can say that we have fallen in love with several of her songs off her latest album. In July she released an EP - ever since then, Slow Me Down, her first single, has been on repeat on my iPod. It's a cross between Imogen Heap and Enya but with a different twist. What can we say? We sorta have a crush.
