SFist Photo: Lights Out at the Golden Gate Bridge
This is what our bridge looked like last night when 600 or so light bulbs on the suspension cables were turned off in preparation for Saturday's Lights Out San Francisco event.

The Golden Gate Bridge sure appeared a little spooky yesterday, but it was all for a good cause. Or for a crackpot idea, depending on how you look at it.
Assuming the San Mateo Times is correct, then the de-lighted bridge will use 10,800 (or 5,400 if you do the math) fewer watt-hours of electricity during the one-hour lights-out period on Saturday. That's enough energy to power Al Gore's famous house for 20-30 minutes. Or enough to warm Dick Cheney's cold, cold heart 1/1000th of a degree. Depending on how you look at it.
Hope we all feel better in the dark this weekend.

What are you talking about? The Golden Gate Bridge doesn't have lights on the cables...
Last I checked, 10,300 W-h = 10.3 kWh ->
Electricity costs ~$0.10 a kWh, so the government is saving a whopping buck Oh-3.
Or, if you do the math, $0.54 .
