Without the miracle of CCTV, Will Smith and Gene Hackman would never have had zany adventures together.

When are they going to off shore the monitoring?

Giant rooms somewhere in SE Asia with thousands of bored people working 12 hour days watching you buy shit at 7-11.

if you have to worry about taking a stand and protesting then you are not really committed to what you are protesting.

agirlsgirl...the mayor has repeatedly stated that there will NOT be anyone monitoring the cameras. They are put up for deterence and after-a-crime-has-been-committed investigation.

Even though there is no privacy on public streets, you do have to ask yourself, how far do I want this to go. On the one hand, you can say that if you don't do anything wrong, than you have nothing to worry about.

On the flip side, if you are at a protest gathereing, perhaps protesting the wrong person, could they get ahold of footage to use against you? That's what we have to watch out for, imho.

I don't really get why this is so controversial. You don't have a right to privacy on a public street.

Now, will there be anyone actually monitoring the cameras? Probably not.

The meter maid with the cameras is being used to do computer automated parking enforcement, especially for those hourly limit zones. The computer can tell if you parked there too long, if you moved the car far enough to have the time limit cleared, and if you rubbed off the chalk.

A guy in NY got convicted of murder because of info stored on his Metrocard [fastpass].

He claimed he was nowhere near the crime scene, but the coding on the card showed he had used the subway stop nearest the location at the same time the murder occured.

Remember to shread your Fastpass or BART ticket after you murder anyone.

We've sacrificed a lot of liberty for the excuse of "security" (and "convienence").

Credit and debit cards track your purchases and shopping preferences.

All e-commerce websites (and of course, teh Google) track your keywords and interests.

Cameras spying on us all around (though I think that, given the city's record on maintenance, a good number of them are out of service at any given time... it's just for an illusion of security).

And all our phone conversations are indeed being monitored by the N.S.A.

Even with legislation or policy changes, it's just not going to get any better. We probably have to learn to live with it.

WARNING:

Be careful where you pick and scratch when in public. Never adjust gondal regions or cha-chas unless you are in a certified mini-cam free restroom or at home.

Google, the NSA and other spy sputnicks are watching us 24x7. The only protection at home is to aluminum foil over all windows.

I don't know how Mayor Newsom thinks the City can maintain complex devices like video cameras outside when the SF PUC cannot even seem to maintain lightbulbs (aka street lights).

5+ weeks ago I called up the nifty 311 service (excellent operation, by the way) to report street lamps/lights out on Main Street, 2nd street light south of Folsom on the west side of the street along with a lamp/light on the NW corner of Harrison Street at Spear. As of a couple of nights ago when I last walked in the area at night, they were still not lighting up.

If the City cannot change a light bulb in a timely fashion, they're kidding themselves that these cameras will be maintained. Pitiful.
