New (ish) Contributer Interview: Julie Feinstein Adams

julie.jpg
Ch-ch-changes! Man, SFist is going to miss Krissy! As part of our silent protest against her decamping to Austin, we’ve been ignoring happier changes, just so that we’d have something to comfort us at this point. So dry your eyes, despite the departure of one of SFist’s finest, we think there’s still some hope for the future. As you probably noticed (a while back, true), Julie Feinstein Adams has become a force in the SFist posting world, filling our gastronomic void with pieces on the local food scene. At long last, we’re giving Julie her rightful due, with a full fledge interview. Read on for food tips and more.

I wanted to write for SFist because:
I need attention. Lots of attention.

You should read my pieces because:
You'll eat better, look nicer, be more surrealist, and give interesting holiday gifts.

Best ever article on SFist
Mine or somebody else's? -- refer to answer to question above. I'm pleased with my Herbivore review because it elicited some helpful veggie food alternative recommendations from readers.

Favorite picture on SFist
Again, I refer to my own work -- most of which was taken with my scrappy little camera-phone: The ceramic dog on the counter at Bulldog Café. Oh, the beauty, the soft focus background, the semi-fisheye. Woof.

Name
Julie Feinstein Adams

Introduce yourself in one sentence
I’m Julie, your cruise director.

Age and Occupations
38, writer, communications consultant, theater artist, teacher

Home Town
Los Angeles

How long have you lived in the Bay Area and Where
Since 1987: South Berkeley until 1992 (while attending college), Oakland ever since -- Lake Merritt area. Because Oakland is friendly, social, easy to navigate, full of trees, centrally located in the Bay Area, less subject to the traffic jam horrors of 80, and relatively mellow.

Favorite place to spend time online
My own site, other sites where I post. I'm vain that way (see final questions below). I also like to check the frequently emailed articles list at NY Times.

Favorite local businesses
Prather Ranch Meat Company and Cowgirl Creamery

What I'm currently Reading
Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen

Best Deal in San Francisco the East Bay
Maribel on Lakeshore

Favorite mode of transportation
Feet

Best Band or Musician to come out of the Bay Area

Favorite Bay Area Stereotype, and whether or not you buy into it
Angry hippies. And yes, I do know some.

Favorite local hangout
4th Street in Berkeley

Oakland has the BEST
vibe

You've never lived in the Bay Area until
You've gone out for late night comedy and Chinese food

Favorite Bay Area politician of past or present
Jerry Brown ("favorite" having many connotations)

Now that Mayor Gavin is single, who are you going to set him up with?
Himself -- I think he needs a little "me" time

You can tell someone is a local here IF
They eschew major chain coffee houses -- or at least apologize when they don't.

Oakland would be soooo much better if only
The city would fix the potholes

Best Burrito
Cactus Taqueria (on College Ave. or Solano) -- extra gold stars because they use naturally raised meats....and honorable mention for Whole Foods because you get a brown rice option, clean meat, and the burrito is the size of your head -- all for $7.

Best Restaurant
Impossible to name only one in the Bay Area. If just confined to the East Bay, I'd still give a list (alphabetically): Bay Wolf, Café Rouge, Chez Panisse, Downtown, Eccolo, Luka's, Olivetto, Rivoli... And many more!

Best movie scene filmed in or about SF
Anything from Foul Play.

Favorite artists to come out of the Bay Area
Nanos Operetta
, Lunatique Fantastique

Favorite author to come out of the Bay Area
Anne Lamott

Places you always tell visitors to check out
De Young Museum, view of SF skyline from Treasure Island

Favorite Bridge in the area
Golden Gate, as approached from the Marin side on the highway, or from above in a small plane

You have two hours and $15 bucks to kill in SF, what are you going to do?
Grab a bite and go see a movie at the Opera Plaza or the Embarcadero Theaters

I have found/sold/bought the following on craigslist
Oak file cabinet, crib, dresser.

I want all the SFists out there to know
They're pretty knowledgeable already

Tell us a San Francisco Story
Back in the day, I went to San Francisco State and got a master's degree in Performance Art (due to budget cuts, the Inter-Arts department was eliminated and so you can't really do that anymore). Several years later, I met the guy who later became my husband at a party, and the first story he told me was about studying performance art in the late 80s at the San Francisco Art Institute.

Around that time, I also met a "real" performance artist and one of the "NEA 4," John Fleck -- who about pissed himself laughing when he found out one could get a master's degree in the subject.
