What Hath Halloween Wrought?

According to the BAR, there now exists a need for "the creation of an Office of Special Events" at City Hall, a "'dedicated and separately funded' office to oversee annual events like Halloween."

But isn't that the Entertainment Commission's job, you ask? Doesn't it "plan and coordinate the provision of City services for major events for which there is no recognized organizer, promoter, or sponsor," as it says on SFGov?

No, it seems. "The Entertainment Commission's first mission is to permit and bring into compliance [pft] nighttime entertainment establishments. It doesn't have the staff for large events," they told the BAR.

Why can't the Merchants of Upper Market/Castro handle it? It's their neighborhood, after all. From reading the article, it sounds like the reason nothing happened is because people kept trying to get City Hall involved.

For the love of God ... can we stop creating rules, jobs, and other annoyances for just a few weeks and try to figure out the value of the rules, jobs, and other annoyances already in place?

I love Lord Bevan's comment in that article, "We cannot have a no-go policy in 2008. I am personally not willing to go through this next year."

Poor, poor Bevan! All of his suffering! I mean, if he hadn't screwed the pooch on this from the very beginning, would there be any suffering? Jesus, what a twit! I believe, and I could be wrong here (but I'm not), if he had followed through on any of the promises that he made, there would be an organized event somewhere else in the City. If he hadn't waited until the last minute to not call any meetings and then throw his hands in the air and declare the whole shebang moot, maybe none of this mess would even exist.

What a nimrod!
