Yesterday I told her that I had already donated, twice. I was amazed when she replied, "Well, lots of people give more than that, some many times". It was hard to know what to say in response, but I commented on the pink donation cards festooning the checkout area. She said, in a sing-song voice, "Well, we're just doing our part." Implying, I suppose, that I wasn't. This time I was ready for her. "Somewhat MORE than your part, I would say", I told her, mimicking her sing-songy pseudo-cheery demeanor. "I wonder how much Safeway is benefiting from our donations?" I don't trust anyone with charity money....</p>
