We Are All Equal...Except You, Tranny

bambilakeisawesome.jpg

Queer rights groups freaked out, threw a tizzy (understandably), and nixed their support for a workplace discrimination civil rights bill "after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco and Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., pulled transgender people from the legislation that would protect gays and lesbians from workplace discrimination." And since nothing says action like an angry missive or online petition, a letter signed by gay groups was sent to Congress yesterday demanding them to rebuff legislation excluding transgender folk, according to the NGLTF.

One argument is that there's a better chance of the bill getting passed if we locked up our trannies (like the controversial and sublime Miss Bambi Lake, pictured here) in the attic.

As the Chronicle also pointed out today, this raises the question of whether or not activism works better with such compromise while taking baby steps toward progress, or just going whole hog all-or-nothing. (Like the riping off a Band-Aid to ease the pain right-quick, we vote for the latter.)

Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Barney knows what he's doing.

2008 is gonna be a motherfucker of a tidal wave in favor of the Democrats. Later, when have bigger majorities, we can piggyback a lot of legislation on the shoulders of what we've accomplished in 2007.

You should call yourself Brock "Right-quick" Keeling.

And don't give Bambi your Breast Cancer donation!

OUCH.

I actually felt physical pain when I read the first sentence. Seriously ouch.

Well, we're not all as snappy as they are in Boston.

what people don't seem to understand, sangfroid826, is that the part of the bill in question is "gender identity," not specifically transgendered people. think about the vast hole this creates. all it will take is the first butch woman or queeny man to get fired. corporate response: "we didn't fire john doe because he was gay [sexual orientation - protected], but because he didn't conform to acceptable male standards [gender identity - not protected]." what makes it dangerous for lgbtq people in the workplace is not that they're having sex with the someone of the same gender in their office, it's cuz they don't conform to the stereotypes of what a "normal" man or woman is supposed to look/act/speak like. and that falls under gender identity, not sexual orientation.

No, you're much nicer than Bostonians though. But I was referring to the subject of this post- not you're commentary (which I always love, so don't let *~tha h8rz~* bring you down, Brock). I think this particular topic has shot Nancy Pelosi to the top of my "Democrats to watch out for, because they're going to RUIN America" list. Yes, there's a list.

=)
