SFist Watches: Thursday's Fall TV Premieres

Uglysweatervest.jpg
Thursday is almost as bad as Monday when it comes to overcrowded primetime line-ups. We'll start with ABC and the "Ugly Betty" premiere at 8 p.m.

Every time we watched an episode last year we thought, "Wow. We should really be enjoying this more than we are." Occasionally cute, occasionally funny, it was never consistently anything. And we especially hated how they decided to change an entire storyline during the middle of the season with the introduction of Rebecca "She's my sister! She's my brother!" Romijn as the tranny heir to the magazine. This is one of those shows we may have to drop this year.

Much like "Grey's Anatomy," which premieres at 9 p.m. Last season was overshadowed by the Isaiah Washington controversy, but we mustn't forget the egregious things that happened within the context of the show. Like how Izzie Stevens turned into a completely hateful character who could sleep with her married friend, and still remain totally self-riotous. And everyones treatment of the perfectly lovely Callie was just shameful. We wish SHE'D get her own spin-off so she could get the hell away from all those assholes. And let's not even discuss the never ending saga of Meredith and McDreamy. This may be the year we say good-bye to these jerks for good.

Speaking of jerks, a new series follows "Grey" at 10 p.m. It's called "Big Shots" and it looks absolutely awful. Here, just read this description from ABC:

This is the story of four friends at the top of their game... until the women in their lives enter the room. Lines between boardroom and bedroom blur when these competitive but dysfunctional CEOs take refuge in their friendship, discussing business, confiding secrets, seeking advice and supporting each other through life's surprising twists and turns.

Yuck. Not even the presence of the always delicious Dylan McDermott can compel us to watch this...Probably.

CBS has "CSI" at 9 p.m. (will Sara live or die?!) and "Without a Trace" at 10 p.m. (will we ever watch this show?!).

The CW has a new season of "Smallville" and it looks like it will be Supergirl-centric this year.

Which brings us to NBC and the return "My Name Is Earl" at 8 p.m. Last season Earl sacrificed his freedom and went to prison so Joy could remain free. Yeah, yeah, whatever, because...

OMIGOD PAM AND JIM ARE TOTALLY TOGETHER AND IN LOVE AND DID YOU SEE WHEN HE ASKED HER OUT AT THE END OF LAST SEASON THAT WAS SO AWESOME OMIGOD PAM AND JIM 4EVAH!!!1!!1!!....."The Office" returns at 9 p.m.

Oh, and there's also a new season of "ER" at 10 p.m...

PAM AND JIM!

Is ER really still on TV?

Huh.

OH MY GOD JIM AND PAM! JIM AND PAM! JIM AND PAM! JAM 4EVA

(actually, if they do get them together, which they probably are, it'll eventually kill the show. These things NEVER go well)

Yeah Big Haircut!!

p.s. They (Pam and Jim) are together, and it will be awesome! I can't wait for 9pm.

Actually, I really hope they don't go the old tired route of forcing strife into the relationship because it's supposedly more interesting to watch. Just because some characters are together and a happy couple does not instantly mean they are now boring. Has no one ever seen "The Thin Man" movies?

Totally! I am just looking forward to a forced, awkward Michael/Jan & Jim/Pam double date. You know that Michael is going to be super jealous of their relationship as he tries to manage his relationship with the coming train wreck that is Jan Levinson.

Rain, I hope you're right as. The "will they or won't they" storylines never make a show better (despite how they mastered it on "Cheers").

I still totally love Ugly Betty and her cute geek boyfriend (will they or won't they?) and her cute gay nephew and that genius actress who plays the receptionist (damn, can't remember the character's name either).

The receptionist is GENIUS. She's the main reason I watch this show. And the other gay assistant. Those two steal the show. Hands down.

Is no one going to give props to Vanessa Williams? She's awesome on Ugly Betty!

Rain, yeah, the Thin Man stuff was fun but I'm trying to remember a sitcom, or any tv show, in which a will they/won't they couple becomes a couple and the show still works. Can you think of a show where it worked? Rhoda?

And isn't the point of "the Office" to be all about unfilfilled dreams that you never act upon. JAM kind of goes against the theme of the show, it'll be two people actually doing what they should do and be all happy about it, which isn't the point of the show. Or wasn't-- the Office has been getting a bit broader and more sitcommy as it's gone along.

I can't think of any off the top of my head, but it seems like shows never even give it a chance to work. There are certainly shows whose very concept is a happy couple at the center, so it's not unfathomable.

But just because Pam and Jim are happy together doesn't mean their whole lives will be happy. They're still stuck working at the Office, and the humor should come from that--a constant struggle to get the hell out of there, which doesn't necessarily happen quickly. Plenty of people stay at jobs they hate for a long, long time.

Can't get enough of Jim & Pam's [The] Office romance, flip to Season Premier of Gav 4 Gov.

Fox's latest "Must See" Reality TV featuring San Francisco's Gavin & Jennifer Siebel welcome Ruby Rippey-Tourk fresh from rehab plus an All-Star cast: Newsom Nemesis, Chris Daly; Old Socialite Chum Billy Getty and Ex-Wife & Queen of Court TV, Kimberly Guilfoyle.

Watch Gavin’s psyche unravel as Booze, Cocaine and Extra Extra-Marital Affairs prevail. Oh, and …hold it, hold it… add New Age Author and Gay-Lovin-Gone-Bad Stalker Han Shin into the mix. Stir with Purple latex gloves.
