i think the disinfectant was for the walls and sidewalk in that area, in fact, it looks like they replaced or resurfaced a lot of the sidewalk with some kind of plasticy fake brick thing. that corner really did have a bit of a stank to it.

Ha, my dogs prefer to pee on pretty things too! But I don't let them.

Really, when it builds up the dog pee can get really really stinky. One dog's pee = barely noticeable. 2 or more dogs' pee = really really bad. Just ask my backyard.

You can keep your dog from peeing on the trees by merely not letting them stop until they get to the spot where you want them to pee.

There's a guy in my neighborhood who has made the base of his street tree fancy with flowers around it, etc. My dogs are clearly dying to pee all over it. I just tighten their leashes and keep them moving.

But pee is probably less harmful to the tree than soap and disinfectant.

Point taken, Holly. (though it is truly barely noticeable...).
Street trees, once peed upon, are dog-pee territory.

Just plain water is probably better for the world, and works better, than 'soap and disinfectant' though...

I have two dogs, and their pee most definitely DOES smell. NOt the same as cats' but more than "hardly," for sure. It's not too hard to train them to pee somewhere else or to keep them away from the tree, but once a couple of dogs pee on something every single other dog that comes along will want to pee there too.

Street trees (and anything else on the sidewalks or in the walkways of dogs) is dog pee-worthy.
Not only can you not stop a dog once it's started, but... it's their territorial right.
If you don't want them to pee on it, put up a (uncoded and possibly illegal) wire guard or wall around your street tree.

Poop is another story:
Harvey Milk penned the SF City Law: SF Health Code #40. Scoop Thy Dog's Poop

Dog pee hardly smells (as opposed to cat pee: think Sauvignon Blanc...).
So what's the big deal?
Or do we really have human's peeing there?
It's Noe Valley, not SOMA, right?

Word to the wise, you can't stop a dog peeing when it starts. That' one of the unshakable rules of the universe.
